The market for used explorer yachts will include modern purpose-built vessels and older commercial craft updated and refitted to a hopefully high standard.
Intended for true global cruising, able to access and explore remote waters and lands, leaving little or no trace, these yachts are highly specialised and, regardless of the age and origin of the vessel, will require a huge amount of research and consideration prior to any offer being made.
An explorer should be able to operate in all conditions, from the tropics to Polar regions, offering immense build-quality. The engineering must be of the highest calibre with multiple back-ups to key systems, including generators and watermakers, as well as more general spares.
Depending on how you wish to use your explorer yacht, and in what regions of the world you will be cruising, the actual specification will differ from yacht to yacht, but some things will remain. Spending long periods at sea will require large tank capacities, stabilisation and the correct cabin numbers for guests and crew.
When buying a used explorer, consideration should also be given to the age and condition of auxiliary and support craft.
