70 Crew

German builder Lurssen proudly delivered the world's longest yacht, Azzam, in November 2013. Nearly five years earlier, Eclipse set sail as the world's longest yacht. The difference between the LOA is easily enough to park four Lamborghini Gallardos nose-to-boot.

Both of these yachts will allow 36 guests to sleep aboard; Azzam, however, has 80 crew members compared to Eclipse’s 70. So Azzam can sleep the same number of guests as Eclipse, but she has almost 15% more crew to deal with operations. In addition, Azzam also has provision for around 60 of the guests' employees. Although both superyachts support the luxury of air travel, guests onboard Eclipse experience the ultimate ease of transfers and the opportunity for adventures off the yacht, with the inclusion of not one, but two helipads.

Despite its name gross tonnage (GT) is not about weight. It actually measures the overall internal volume of a yacht, including all enclosed spaces like cabins and storage areas. When comparing the GT of Azzam and Eclipse, it becomes clear why it is a more accurate metric for determining yacht size in contrast to overall length. Because, actually, despite their difference in length, their amount of usable volume is almost the same. The difference is more than 20 shipping containers of volume. The YB100 by YachtBuyer reimagines how the world's largest yachts are ranked. In the YB100 rankings, Azzam stands at position five when evaluated by GT, suffering a four-place decline from her position in the Top 100 based on length. Furthermore, in the YB100, Eclipse sits at number four, slipping down by two positions from her place in the Top 100.

Azzam's range falls short of Eclipse's by 1,000 nm, potentially resulting in a cruising time that's around a day and 12 hours less*. Furthermore, her speed when cruising is one knot slower than Eclipse's, implying that, departing from Miami, Florida to Ibiza, Spain, she might arrive roughly 12 hours later than Eclipse.
