Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement ice class steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 20.87m beam and a 5.1m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 9,604 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.
Construction started in late 2004 with the keel laid under the project name 'May'. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in March 2006 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in July 2008.
Exterior Design
A notable aspect of Al Mirqab's design is the innovative use of lighting to accentuate the yacht's features. Underwater lights, which were advanced for the time of her construction, highlight the vessel's presence in the water, including strategically placed lights on the upper surface of the bulbous bow that illuminate its above-water profile at night. This lighting concept has since been adopted by many in the industry.
The yacht also boasts a substantial aft platform, a continuation of a design feature Heywood has developed over time. This platform not only enhances the yacht's profile but also serves as an additional space for entertainment and relaxation. It also provides a dignified setting for arrivals and departures. Al Mirqab is equipped with a helicopter pad that includes a refueling station. At the time of design, it was the largest such pad created by Heywood, requiring substantial structural input from the shipyard, Kusch Yachts, to accommodate it.
Permanent sun awnings on the aft owner's deck are another first for the yacht, offering a sheltered area that extends the living space outdoors, providing protection and comfort while dining or lounging.
Interior Design
The materials used onboard Al Mirqab were chosen for their quality and resilience, including light sycamore for walls and soft fabrics that provide a tranquil atmosphere throughout the yacht.
The family lounge, a space dedicated to relaxation and social interaction, overlooks the bow of the yacht. The decoration theme of butterflies is incorporated to instill a sense of serenity and connection with nature. The lounge's design emphasizes comfort, with its soft-clad walls and gentle color palette.
The main deck saloon is structured in a square plan, with distinct seating areas located in each section of the room. This space draws inspiration from a courtyard terrace, featuring fountains and casual seating arranged around a central sculpture. The choice of furnishings and layout encourages guests to gather and enjoy the environment.
A unique feature of Al Mirqab is the underwater viewing room, situated forward of the internal swimming pool. This room is adorned with a pirate theme, complete with chests of gold, designed to captivate the imaginations of both children and adults. This space allows for an immersive experience of the ocean's underwater vistas.
The yacht's staircase, which traverses four floors, is another notable element of the interior design. This floating staircase encircles a suspended glass artwork by Dale Chihuly, creating a visual focal point that is both artistic and architecturally intriguing.
Accommodation
Al Mirqab offers accommodation for up to 24 guests in 12 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 60 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.
Performance & Capabilities
Al Mirqab is equipped with a sophisticated propulsion system. The vessel's movement is powered by two electric motors, which are in turn fueled by five 5 x diesel Wartsila (6L32CR) 6-cylinder 3,813hp generators. These generators ensure the smooth operation of the motors, driving conventional shafts alongside a centrally positioned azimuthing electric pod drive. This configuration delivers a harmonious blend of power and maneuverability, allowing Al Mirqab to reach a top speed of 23 knots, and comfortably cruise at 21 knots.
She has been fitted with stabilizers to increase on-board comfort when the yacht is at anchor, particularly in rough waters.
Amenities
A gym with all the latest equipment allows her guests to keep their workout routines while at sea. Rest and relaxation can be achieved on board, thanks to a luxury spa. Full cinema facilities ensure five-star entertainment and also Al Mirqab features a beach club where those on board can enjoy unwinding close to the water. The yacht features a tender garage with storage for a range of toys and accessories. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort and an elevator makes the yacht fully-accessible. Al Mirqab also features deck jacuzzi which provides excellent views.
