Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 18.3m beam and a 4.88m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 8,074 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.
Construction started in mid 1983. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. She was delivered to her owners in June 1984.
Exterior Design
Built in Denmark in 1984, Prince Abdulaziz was commissioned as the royal yacht to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. Its exterior design, by Maierform Maritime exterior design, reflects the status of its owner.
Built by Helsingor Vaerft, this colossal yacht stretches an impressive 147m (482.4ft), holding the title of the world's largest yacht for many years. Despite its four decades of active service, the white superstructure retains its sleek appearance. The decks, sloping back from the commanding bow, rise to house accommodation and socializing decks, with ample windows allowing natural light to illuminate the interior. The lower deck features covered and spacious walkways, including an enclosed area at the stern designated for guest use. The yacht's silhouette is distinctive, marked by two large blue fins or 'pipes' extending from aft of the amidships.
Reflecting its 1980s origins, Prince Abdulaziz showcases safety features openly, a departure from the discreet approach seen in superyachts built since 2000. Visible yet integrated, rescue boats, life rafts, and external stairways complement the classic style of the yacht. A helipad is strategically positioned on the bow.
Interior Design
Ownership by the royal family has shrouded the yacht in secrecy, yet glimpses into its interiors reveal a realm of opulence. The original interior design was orchestrated by the late David Nightingale Hicks, an English interior decorator known for his bold use of colors, innovative lighting, and fusion of modern and classical elements, garnering international acclaim during his lifetime.
Rare and exquisite line drawings of the interior spaces reveal the lavish interior theme, featuring rich ocean blues complemented by cream, deep gold, and soft yellow tones. A nautical theme is skillfully executed, with gold accents and intricately woven compass-inspired insignia gracing handmade carpets. Greek Ionic-style columns serve as partitions for expansive windows dressed with heavy layered drapes, creating a presidential suite ambiance. Large chandeliers are recessed into deeply paneled ceilings and intricate window dressings provide a sumptuous backdrop.
In one of the expansive salon areas, rich and mid-blue swirled patterns dominate handmade carpets against a background of gold. Plentiful soft furnishings, including an abundance of cushions and deep seating, are strategically illuminated by well-placed lamps, while a spectacular chandelier takes center stage against a mirrored ceiling. Informal salon areas continue the blue theme, this time in a dark navy offset with light blue hints, with less elaborate window dressings in the form of Roman blinds. The tables are adorned with a blue mosaic against a gold background and framework.
The guest suites boast intricately carved columns, adding textured interest to the rooms. Bed settings are adorned with rich brocade coverings, and fan-shaped headboards match ceiling textured inlays. A harmonious blend of natural wood is featured in furniture, inlaid with thoughtful designs.
One of the many standout features is the lobby, adorned with exquisite chandeliers recessed into ceilings highlighted with gold accents. Greek-inspired columns and paneled walls continue, and showcase rich artwork, creating an atmosphere of refined elegance.
In exclusive photographs, the cinema room unfolds in a captivating color scheme of red set against bronze furnishings. The ceiling, paneled with dark wood and adorned with rich burgundy insets, integrates with the overall interior scheme. Expansive windows are adorned with swagged window dressing style in luxurious materials, featuring gold brocade, establishing a lavish and opulent ambiance for the ultimate relaxation while enjoying the latest cinema releases.
A central carpet with a compass-inspired symbol, consistent throughout all interior spaces, serves as a focal point, strategically placed near a desk where guest services are orchestrated by a professional and discreet crew of 65.
