Boat manufacturer White River Marine Group has announced it has bought Hatteras Yachts in a move that is set to create 500 new jobs.
As part of the deal, White River Marine Group will also be investing $34million to upgrade the Hatteras Yachts facility in New Bern, North Carolina and moving all of its saltwater production to the site. The New Bern facility will also serve as a research and development center for sea trialing and product development.
White River Marine Group is the world’s largest builder of fishing and recreational boats by volume, and includes the brands Tracker, Mako, Ranger, Triton, Tahoe, Nitro and others.
Johnny Morris, CEO of Bass Pro who are the parent company of White River Marine Group, explained he sees the deal as a long-term investment: “Our focus isn't on the next few months, it's for way out there in the future and we’ll reside here for a long time,” he said.
Governor Roy Cooper said he expects the project to grow the state’s economy by nearly $1.2billion over the next 12 years.
White River Marine Group has also expressed its intention to ensure Hatteras retains its iconic place in the sportsfisher market, saying: “We’re committed to supporting Hatteras in staying true to its roots as a legendary saltwater brand built by a passion for fishing while expanding our operations to better serve all those who love the sea.”
