YachtBuyer is the only place where you can directly compare competing yacht models, with full breakdowns on technical specifications and onboard features.

So with YachtBuyer you can not only enjoy the best data and market activity on your chosen yachts but also how they compare to their closest rivals.

In Beneteau and Outer Reef we have two yards that have a real understanding of how people use their yachts and the result, in this head-to-head, is two fresh but still very functional takes on the trawler genre.

The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 and Outer Reef 620 Trident are, on the face of it, similarly modern but respectful takes on the classic trawler yacht, combining contemporary styling and ideas with plenty of space and a convivial feel. There are some notable differences, though, not least in the flybridge layout and the way each yacht uses its interior space.

Performance

These displacement yachts both benefit from twin propulsion to give very similar performance stats and matching 20 knot top speeds. The Outer Reef 620 Trident’s twin Cummins QSB6.7 engines, providing 550hp, give it a slight edge with a cruising speed of 18 knots compared to the Beneteau’s 16 knots.

The Outer Reef also has an additional engine option: twin 600hp Cummins QSC8.3, whereas the Beneteau Grand Trawler has the one choice, twin MAN i6-730 engines providing 730hp each.

When it comes to range, Beneteau quote 1,000nm at 10 knots with a 4,000-liter fuel capacity, with Outer Reef reporting a range of 1,376nm at 7 knots with a 3,208-liter fuel capacity.

Interior

These two yachts do feel very different when you step inside, with two contrasting layouts. The Outer Reef 620 Trident has a galley aft layout, making it as easy to serve meals on the aft deck as it is the dinette and settee area which is set forward by the lower helm. Two swing-away stools adjoin the galley for informal seating, with comfy lounge seating directly opposite.

The Beneteau Grand Trawler on the other hand has its galley raised up amidships to port, a traditional trawler layout, with a dining area directly opposite. Located aft is a U-shaped sofa, with storage space directly opposite. The Grand Trawler’s galley can also be fully enclosed.

Regardless of the two contrasting design styles, both models make excellent use of space and their interiors are well-appointed and offer plenty of natural light.

Accommodation

Both these models have a three-cabin layout, to accommodate six guests, with the Grand Trawler also having an optional four-cabin layout.

Both have full-beam Owner’s cabins located amidships and you can really feel the Beneteau making the most of its extra 0.5m beam here. There is enough space either side for storage and a vanity desk with a seat, with the en-suite located forward the cabin enjoys the full beam and so feels very open.

The Outer Reef’s Owner’s cabin has its ensuite located starboard side, which does reduce the cabin space slightly but it is still an impressive retreat with a king-sized berth, ample storage and a nightstand table.

Both have VIP cabins located in the bow, each with plenty of headroom. The Grand Trawler’s third cabin is made up of twin beds side by side, whereas the Outer Reef’s come in the form of bunks. In the Grand Trawler's four-cabin layout, the VIP becomes the Owner's suite with two convertible twin cabins amidships.

Both also have crew accommodation aft of the lower deck.

Helm Station

Both the Outer Reef 620 Trident’s lower and upper helm stations are on the centerline. The Grand Trawler has its main deck helm station on the center line and its fly deck helm to the starboard side.

The lower helm designs look and feel like they mean business, set before tall windscreens, the Beneteau adding some trawler heritage with its reverse sheer design. The Ocean Reef console makes space for two MFD screens, the Beneteau managing three, with single seats as standard, the Beneteau again having the option of a second. Importantly, there is guest seating up and around both helms, ideal for longer passages. There is plenty of space to move around either side of the helm, even with the Grand Trawler's extra helm seat.

The upper helms both enjoy twin helm stations with clean raised consoles and space for large MFD screens. The Beneteau's starboard helm leaving enough space for L-shape guest seating and a table opposite.

Deck Areas

Both these yachts have nice wide side decks, that make accessing the large forward sun pad that both models have easy.

When it comes to the aft cockpit there is a difference in the layout. The Beneteau Grand Trawler has L-shaped seating to port side with guests having sea views, whilst the Outer Reef Trident has a U-shaped sofa facing forward and a small wet bar area.

Both have hydraulic bathing platforms, the Beneteau’s coming with a swim ladder with handles and an aft-facing seat.

Flybridge

The Grand Trawler enjoys a vast, social upper deck, very much in the modern flybridge style. There is space for a large u-shaped sofa and table that seats eight, a big L-shaped wetbar opposite to serve guests. There is a further L-shaped seating area adjacent to the helm station and enough free aft deck for two sun loungers and an optional tender crane aft.

The 620 Trident is more traditional in its flybridge thinking with a stepped deck that keeps the aft area completely clear for a tender. The separate seating and dining area is then up and forward around the twin helm. It is another sociable layout with an L-shaped sofa and table, the wet bar located at the steps, as is the traditional trawler way.

Both have a protective hardtop with a sliding sunroof, for the occasions when an abundance of fresh air and sunlight is needed.

Compare Layouts

Although similar in length, there is quite a difference in beam between the two models with the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 being over half a meter wider.

This gives the Beneteau a bit more space to play with and as a result it has an optional four-cabin layout, with the forward cabin becoming the Owner’s cabin and the amidships cabin space being configured as two guest cabins, sleeping in total up to eight guests. There is also the option to add an extra main deck helm seat.
