Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 13.2m beam and a 6.25m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 2,407 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in mid 1973. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in April 1974 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in November 1974.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the yacht Legend is characterized by its robust and imposing stature, reflecting its heritage as a Class I icebreaker. Originally constructed by the Dutch shipyard IHC Verschure, Legend served as a formidable icebreaker for the Soviet merchant marines. Its transformation into a luxury exploration yacht has not compromised its sturdy build, retaining its capability to navigate through challenging icy waters.
Legend has been outfitted with a commercial helideck on the owner's deck aft, designed to accommodate a six-person Eurocopter 135. This feature is complemented by advanced fire extinguishing systems, an eight-tonne helifuel storage tank, and comprehensive bunker systems. A secondary, smaller helicopter is also provided for emergencies and can be transported via a crane from the helideck to the extended forecastle deck. Storage for rotor blades and protective vacuum-wrapping ensure the helicopters are maintained in pristine condition during voyages.
The yacht's utilitarian charm is evident in its well-appointed deck spaces, offering both functionality and proximity to the sea. Legend's exterior design, while prioritizing practicality, also provides an ample platform for adventure and exploration, equipped with a variety of toys and exploration gear. Whether it is the foredeck toy garage housing snowmobiles and the three-person U-Boat Worx C-Explorer submarine or the commercial helideck, every element has been integrated with a clear focus on enabling unforgettable experiences in the most remote corners of the globe.
Interior Design
The main deck saloon serves as a communal gathering space, designed to evoke a sense of warmth and intimacy. The area features dark wood paneling and an artificial fireplace, creating an inviting atmosphere for guests to convene and relax. This space is equipped to host dining events, providing guests with a cozy environment to enjoy meals together.
Moving forward of the main saloon, guests will discover a unique whisky bar and cigar room. The room is appointed with wood paneling and monochrome floor tiles featuring a compass star, while the furniture is upholstered in a smart humbug stripe. The bar is stocked with an extensive selection of whiskies and boasts a library of cigars, though the books adorning the walls are purely decorative.
Adjacent to the bar, a 14-seat cinema offers an entertainment experience reminiscent of a classic train's first-class carriage. This space is optimized for acoustic performance and visual enjoyment, ensuring guests can fully immerse themselves in the cinematic experience.
For those inclined towards physical fitness, the gym is strategically positioned to offer natural light and proximity to the yacht's social areas. Equipped with state-of-the-art Life Fitness Parabody machinery, including an inset treadmill, the gym caters to guests committed to maintaining their exercise regimen during their journey.
Below the main saloon, the Balinese spa presents a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. Decorative woodwork enhances the tranquil environment, which includes a central spa pool, sauna, and massage rooms.
Accommodation
Accommodation aboard Legend offers an exclusive retreat for guests looking to embark on an adventurous journey without sacrificing the comfort and privacy expected of a luxury charter. The yacht, originally built by IHC Verschure, has been converted to accommodate up to 26 guests.
Guest quarters consist of 13 ensuite cabins, each one crafted to evoke the distinct character and style of various world cities. Among these, two VIP suites stand out with their thematic decor—Moscow, with its dark wood and deep red accents, and New York, adorned with art deco elements.
The owner's suite, named Paris, is a sanctuary of serenity with muted tones, warm wood finishes, and a spacious layout that includes a central bed, a private sitting area, and a large bathroom. Adjacent to this suite is the Amsterdam cabin, which can be connected to Paris for expanded living space. A discreet kitchenette located nearby allows for the convenience of self-service refreshments.
Crew accommodation is strategically positioned to ensure prompt and efficient service while maintaining guest privacy. The 19 regular crew members, along with a specialized expedition team of 10, are housed in dedicated quarters across the lower, main, and boat decks. The captain and the ice pilot have their cabins behind the revamped wheelhouse, central to the yacht's navigation and operations.
