Exterior Design

Q's exterior design is an impeccable blend of robust functionality and sleek aesthetics, a testament to both its initial construction as a commercial vessel and its transformation into a luxury yacht. Its ruggedly elegant design is the result of an innovative design concept that draws inspiration from a variety of sources, from medieval helmets to stealth jets and 1930s-style trains.

The designers began the transformation of Q by crafting its distinctive "face", integrating elements such as a medieval helmet design. Q's exterior not only has a unique character but is also executed in a commercial finish that hints at its past life. The hull of Q is a marvel of engineering, boasting a double layer of steel that is virtually indestructible. The ice-breaking propellers are a testament to its strength and resilience.

Despite its transformation, Q has not lost its past charm. The designers ensured that the vessel’s commercial history was not hidden. Instead, it was embraced and incorporated into its new design. The original cabins and wheelhouse were incorporated into the new superstructure, which also includes an observation lounge forward, an open deck above, a certified helideck for an Airbus H145 helicopter, and a toy garage.

The exterior design of Q also considers functionality. With its industrial crane used for launching tenders and vehicles, Q is designed to handle the demands of extreme exploration. The crane extends several meters and supports a load of up to 10 tonnes.

The vessel's ability to handle a wide range of climates is another remarkable feature. Q is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from minus 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for travels from the tropical Caribbean to the icy waters of the Baltic.

The exterior design of Q is not just robust and functional, but also aesthetically pleasing. The deck offers a sheltered open-air space with a spa pool, bar, barbecue, and seating area. The panoramic upper saloon with space for outdoor dining is another feature that adds to the luxury feel of the yacht.

She not only exudes luxury and comfort but also makes Q an even better candidate for the charter market.

Interior Design

Diving headfirst into the interiors of the Q, one is met with a fascinating blend of design influences that seamlessly marry the ruggedness of its exterior with the luxury expected of a high-end yacht. The original brief called for an interior that would be a comforting haven for guests returning from a day of heli-skiing, snowboarding, or exploring. The resultant design creates the warmth of a ski chalet, borrowing heavily from the influences of brooding Scottish castle interiors and the utilitarian elegance of Scandinavian design.

The upper saloon houses a giant wooden wheel reminiscent of a galleon, adding a whimsical touch that harkens back to the sea-faring adventures of old. The dining room features a full-size likeness of the Viking warrior Rognar Lodbrok, a nod to the yacht's name and the spirit of exploration it embodies. The main saloon and upper saloon bars, designed to mirror the cozy ambiance of British-style pubs, reflect the owner's affection for these establishments.

In the main saloon, small leather inserts within the fielded panels of the joinery are embossed with the coats of arms of explorers, an additional homage to the spirit of adventure that the Q embodies. The tartan fabrics, Chesterfield seats, dark-stained walnut walls, and chevron Parquet floors of the upper saloon and dining room provide a stark contrast to the bleached oak and light, neutral colors of the observation lounge and guest cabins. This juxtaposition further enhances the comfortable and inviting ambiance on board.

The design team took into account the various global destinations the owner wanted to explore, and the interior design reflects these different regions. For instance, the wellness area is a calming and serene space filled with warm travertine stone and teak wood, perfect for warming up after a ski expedition or an ice-cold shower. The gym is equipped with the latest Technogym equipment, ensuring that guests have access to top-of-the-line fitness facilities.

The interior layout of the Q is unique and deviates from the usual yacht designs. The original crew accommodation was retained, resulting in a layout unlike any other yacht. However, it works perfectly for Q's mission as a private explorer and occasional charter vessel. The top deck is the most yacht-like area with a spa pool, bar, barbecue, and seating area.

The dining room and bar take up the full beam of the C deck, which also houses an exterior deck with a large pool. The main deck includes five guest cabins, a spare cabin, and a wellness area. The two identical owner's suites are situated aft on B deck, each with access to a private terrace and the forward observation lounge.

Accommodation

The luxury yacht Q offers unparalleled accommodation, providing a seamless blend of comfort, luxury, and functionality.

Onboard, Q comfortably accommodates up to 12 guests within six exquisite cabins. The owner's suite is a true masterpiece with a large double bed, a private seating area, and an en-suite bathroom. An additional five guest cabins are all beautifully appointed, each boasting en-suite facilities, plush bedding, and ample storage space. Each cabin is a haven of tranquility, offering guests a private retreat to relax and unwind after a day of exploration.

The guest accommodation is conveniently separated from the crew quarters, ensuring privacy for guests and efficient operations. The crew accommodation is designed to comfortably house up to 13 crew members. The crew area includes a spacious mess room and separate cabins, each with en-suite facilities. The layout and design of the crew quarters reflect the same attention to detail and quality found throughout the yacht, ensuring a comfortable living and working environment for the crew.

Performance & Capabilities

At the heart of Q's performance are its powerful Caterpillar 2,682hp engines, capable of reaching a top speed of 14 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. These commercial engines are not only robust but are also designed for serviceability, ensuring that they can be maintained and parts can be sourced anywhere in the world. With her 817,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 6,000 nautical miles. This makes Q an ideal vessel for long voyages, capable of venturing to the furthest reaches of the globe without the worry of engine maintenance.

With the highest ice-class rating of 1A, Q can break through ice one-meter thick and even grind up ice with its propellers. The ability to handle such harsh conditions ensures that Q can navigate a diverse range of environments, from the ice floes of the Northwest Passage to the warm waters of the Caribbean.

Adding to Q's impressive performance features is its passive stabilization system. This commercial-style system utilizes a 63mt flume tank system located away from guest areas, ensuring that the yacht remains stable and comfortable, regardless of the conditions. This level of comfort and stability is crucial for a luxury yacht, ensuring that guests can enjoy their journey without compromise.

Q also showcases a certified helideck that can handle an Airbus H145 helicopter, and an industrial crane that extends several meters and supports a load of up to 10 tonnes. This capability adds another layer of convenience and luxury, providing guests with the option to explore their surroundings from the air, or easily launch tenders and vehicles for on-the-ground adventures.

Along with these exceptional performance features, Q is also designed with sustainability in mind. The owner's commitment to the principles of reuse, repair, and recycle is evident in the yacht's conversion from a commercial ship, breathing new life into an existing vessel and reducing the environmental impact of building a new yacht from scratch. This commitment extends to Q's mission to collect atmospheric and oceanographic data during its voyages, contributing to meteorological forecasts and climate science.

Q is a remarkable combination of performance, luxury, and sustainability. It is a vessel that pushes the boundaries of what is possible, opening up a world of adventure and exploration for those fortunate enough to step aboard.
