His retirement as CEO and Director, effective May 1, 2025, marks the end of a near four-decade legacy of innovation, craftsmanship, and bold leadership.
While stepping away from the helm, De Vries will continue to serve as an Ambassador for Feadship, a non-executive board member, and an active shareholder - ensuring that his deep-rooted values and vision remain intertwined with the company's future.

Steering a Family Legacy to Global Prominence
Henk de Vries joined the family business in 1987 and, alongside cousin Tom de Vries, took the reins as director/shareholder in 1996. Under their stewardship, De Vries Scheepsbouw evolved into a modern powerhouse of yacht construction, comprising seven operating companies and employing over 1,200 specialists. The company continues to be family-owned and retains a 50% stake in Feadship, one of the most prestigious names in bespoke superyachts.

Known for his candor, wit, and hands-on approach, De Vries became a global ambassador for Dutch yacht-building excellence. His passion for perfection often went beyond boardrooms and shipyards - perhaps best exemplified by the now-legendary story of him painting his personal car in the exact metallic black finish planned for the 81-meter Feadship Air. His aim? To test how the paint would appear in all lighting conditions and environments. That level of dedication to aesthetic precision became a signature of the Air project, which went on to receive wide acclaim for its sleek, stealthy elegance.
A Pioneer for Sustainability in Yachting
Beyond his contributions to craftsmanship and business strategy, De Vries is celebrated for his forward-thinking environmental leadership. In 2018, he co-founded the Water Revolution Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at reducing the ecological impact of the superyacht sector through science-based solutions. He continues to serve as Chairman of the Board, helping chart a more sustainable course for the industry he loves.
Under his tenure, Feadship has made significant investments in motor yacht hybrid propulsion, alternative fuels, and lifecycle impact assessments - solidifying the brand’s commitment to future-forward innovation.
Passing the Torch
As Henk de Vries transitions to his ambassadorial role, Roderick de Vries will assume responsibilities as CEO and Operational Director, supported by Bas Nederpelt as Chief Commercial Officer and Feadship Director. The new executive board boasts over 80 years of combined experience within the company, a testament to Feadship’s enduring commitment to continuity and in-house expertise.
The four members of our new executive board bring with them over eighty years of De Vries experience. Their deep understanding of the company ensures it is in very capable hands.
A Legacy Cast in Steel and Spirit
From timeless classics like motor yacht Utopia and Cakewalk (now renamed FOS) to boundary-pushing launches like Steve Job's yacht Venus and Savannah, De Vries’ leadership has left an indelible mark on every Feadship hull. But more than yachts, his legacy lies in crafting a culture - one of relentless precision, deep respect for heritage, and a fearless embrace of change.

As he moves into a new chapter, Henk de Vries remains an enduring symbol of Dutch ingenuity, and his influence will be felt across oceans for generations to come.
