Newport shipyard becomes Foreign Trade Zone with duty-free long term mooring

Rhode Island's Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard has officially become the latest US Foreign Trade Zone (FTV), the first yacht-focused FTV outside of the Sunshine State, Florida.

Covering both on land and in-water areas, the FTZ now means that superyachts for sale in the shipyard will be duty-free, and there is no time-limit on how long they can stay.

Before the induction of Safe Harbor becoming an FTZ, other zones around the US included the Cape Charles Yachting Center in Virginia, with the Lauderdale Marine Center and the Bahia Mar Yachting Center the first two duty-free yachting centres in the US.

General manager of the Newport Shipyard, Eli Dana commented, “We believe this is a win for the City of Newport, and the state of Rhode Island, yacht owners, yacht brokers, and Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard.” Interestingly, Dana also confirmed that, “there is no limit to how long a yacht can stay in the FTZ.”

Usually situated adjacent to U.S. Customs and Border Protection ports, or even within them, yachts for sale bearing foreign flags can be imported into an FTZ without having to pay import duties.

In addition to the advantages of bringing yachts into the FTZ, facilities within the zone also benefit by reducing or eliminating duties altogether.

Boasting over 3,500 linear feet of dock space for superyachts up to 106.7m (350ft), there are 50 berths onsite and regular events throughout the year including the Newport Charter Yacht Show and the Newport Bermuda Race Crew Party.

If you're looking at visiting the Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, it is conveniently located as an ideal base to visit New York and Boston.
