German start-up Tyde has unveiled renderings of its inaugural leisure vessel, an e-foiling sport cruiser named The Open, following the buzz generated by its prototype, The Icon.
Positioned as the world's largest foiling electric motor yacht, this walkaround model spans 14.7m (48.3ft) and boasts a top speed of 30 knots.
Designed for eco-conscious private owners seeking advanced and sustainable boating tech, The Open features a zero-emission drivetrain comprising a 400kWh bank of BMW i3 batteries and twin 100kW Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motors mounted atop the rear foil struts. These components enable a cruising range of 50nm at 25 knots.
The Open's efficiency is attributed to its two computer-controlled foils, which elevate the main hull above the water's surface during cruising, enabling it to glide with minimal power consumption. Foiling begins at approximately 17-18 knots, enhancing the vessel's performance and fuel efficiency.
Hydrofoils also offer a smoother ride, as they operate beneath the waves while the hull hovers above, resulting in a more comfortable cruising experience. Additionally, the electric motors ensure exceptionally quiet and vibration-free operation. The fixed foils, however, contribute to a relatively deep draft of 1.95m (6.5ft) in displacement mode.
Developed in collaboration with BMW and its design studio Designworks, The Open showcases a distinctive squared-off reverse-angled bow that extends dramatically above a sharp entry point, creating additional seating space in the bow. The helm, accommodating two seats, is shielded by a wraparound windshield, while below decks, there are sleeping quarters for two and a shower compartment.
