Volvo Penta's New Helm-to-Propeller Hybrid-Electric System

The company's latest system offers seamless transitions between electric, diesel, and hybrid modes for vessels up to 24m.

Volvo Penta has announced the launch of its new helm-to-propeller hybrid-electric package.

This fully integrated system, designed for various vessel sizes, combines advanced hybrid-electric capabilities with innovative features like Joystick Driving, Dynamic Positioning System (DPS), and Assisted Docking in both Pure Electric and Hybrid modes. The development will enable captains to navigate emission-free zones while optimizing fuel consumption and reducing operational costs.

The hybrid-electric system is built around Volvo Penta’s D13 IPS engine range, paired with a 160kW electric motor and optimized batteries. This setup allows for smooth transitions between power sources, with the system automatically selecting between electric, diesel, or hybrid drive modes based on operational needs.

The electric motor and diesel engine can work in parallel, enhancing performance while reducing noise and vibrations — a key advantage for crew comfort and passenger experience. Additionally, the system includes a Cross-Over mode that enables one diesel engine to power both drives, further extending operational efficiency and reducing maintenance intervals.

In a twin installation, the hybrid-electric package can be fitted on boats up to 21m (69ft), while in triple or quad configurations, it has the potential to serve yachts 24m (79ft) and above.

At the end of 2025, Volvo Penta will begin limited-scale production of this hybrid-electric package, which is also fully integrated with the company’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system to ensure easy installation, streamlined maintenance, and enhanced remote diagnostics. 

The pre-production system has been installed onboard the Azimut Seadeck 7 through a collaboration with Volvo Penta, with the boat making its world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024.
