The 60m superyacht market is enjoying possibly its strongest period, thanks largely to these two yachts.

The Amels 60, designed by Espen Oeino, is the replacement for the best-selling Amels 180, and delivers the same six-cabin, tri-deck layout wrapped up in a far sharper exterior design. With a volume of 830GT, the displacement hull will deliver speeds of up to 15 knots using hybrid propulsion, cruising between 11knots-14knots. As a crew-operated vessel capable of extended cruising, there is space for up to 13 crew in separate quarters. The Sanlorenzo 62Steel looks a very close competitor to the Amels 60 with a similar LOA, three exterior decks and six cabins, however, its beam of 11.8m is notably more than the Amels’ 10.4m, the extra 1.4m (8ft) partly explaining the Sanlorenzo’s far greater 1200GT of volume.

Performance levels are close, with a top speed of 16knots and the same cruising range of 11knots-14knots, but the bigger, heavier Sanlorenzo requires larger twin 2012hp engines to do so. As a full crew-operated yacht capable of serious cruising, the 62 Steel can accommodate up to 15 crew. Both yachts are so-called platform builds, mixing a proven and set exterior design with plenty of customisation across the interior and decks, as such the layouts you will see below may be changed, quite radically, by the buyer.

Performance

These crew-operated superyachts are designed for extended cruising with trans-Ocean range a possibility from the full displacement hulls. Both yachts are capable of between 4,000nm and 5,000nm depending on speed, with the Amels quoting 4,500nm at 13knots and the Sanlorenzo 5,000nm at 11knots. The Amels is available with hybrid power, mixing diesel engines with battery-powered electric drive. The heavier Sanlorenzo requires far more horsepower to hit its speeds and has the slightly larger fuel tanks.

Interior

The Amels 60 offers a main salon and elevated bridge salon, creating two distinct social spaces for lounging and dining, leading out to private terraces. The Sanlorenzo offers three tiers of social space with main and upper deck salons as well as a sky lounge across the very top of the yacht. Each salon leads to its own private exterior deck. Glass is a feature of both yachts with full height windows encasing lounges and dining areas.

Accommodation

The Owner’s staterooms are found on the main deck, forward with private access, lounges, dressing rooms and en suites. The Amels’ features a large fold-down balcony, while the Sanlorenzo’s Owner will enjoy their own private foredeck complete with pool and lounge.

Helm Station

As large, crewed, tri-deck yachts, the helm is accommodated in a separate pilothouse offering quick access to the decks, a Captain’s cabin and plenty of space for crew or guests to gather for voyages.

Deck Areas

These tri-deck designs are quite different. The Amels has an open, working foredeck with tender storage and cranes. On its uppermost sundeck, there is an open expanse dedicated to the alfresco lifestyle with options for Jacuzzis, bars, dining and lounge areas. The middle of the sundeck is covered by a huge architectural arch for privacy and protection. The Sanlorenzo encloses its bow, allowing for a private Owner’s deck and pool. There is another, larger, pool on the main deck aft. The sky lounge above creates an extra, completely enclosed, salon (also adding to the yacht’s higher GRT) while still allowing for plenty of elevated open deck space to enjoy the sun.

A superb place to enjoy days or nights on the water, this raised deck and driving position adds another dimension to yacht ownership and the driving experience.

Beach Club

Both of these yachts have superb beach clubs with terraces opening on three sides and adjoining spa and fitness rooms. The Sanlorenzo repeats this builder’s feat of making the main deck pool above part of the story, a glass ceiling allowing light to pass through the water into the club below.

Compare Layouts

Across 60m there is plenty of room for flexibility and options. Both yachts are six-cabin with main deck Owners’ cabins, but go about things quite differently. The Amels has a neat guest cabin aft of the Owner’s, a useful place for children or assistants, with the remaining four cabins on the lower deck. The Sanlorenzo has its guest cabins all on the lower deck. The other big difference is the uppermost deck, where Sanlorenzo deliver a skylounge.
