Benetti Motopanfilo 37M
vs.
Azimut Grande Trideck

Head-to-head or family feud? Both these yachts come from the Benetti Group, the Azimut Grande Trideck clashing wonderfully with its Motopanfilo stablemate as it pushes out of production yachting and into Benetti’s superyacht backyard. In fact, these yachts are different enough to easily complement each other while being similar enough to deserve YachtBuyer Head-to-Head status, a fact underlined by both having a clever but quite different ‘three decks + 1’ concept.

Let’s start with the similarities, both yachts are designed and built in Italy with near-identical beams and Gross Tonnage, the Azimut Grande Trideck being longer by 1m (3.28ft). Both yachts are tri-deck designs and have the same cabin numbers and layouts. There is also a shared feel onboard, with a natural, organic and very calming style mixed with some real Italian luxury flair.

But there are some important differences, not least on hull design and performance. The Motopanfilo is a displacement yacht at heart, with a range of 3,800nm. The Azimut is a planing yacht, hitting 24knots, but with some useful range too.

Performance

So the big differentiator is performance. The Motopanfilo is powered by twin 1400hp or 1650hp MAN V12 engines. This can deliver semi-displacement speeds of up to 18knots but is more about cruising at 10-12knots for good efficiency and range, the 35,000l (7,699gal) fuel tanks delivering 3,800nm.

The Grande Trideck uses Azimut’s D2P (Displacement to Planing) hull design and is powered by twin 2400hp or 2600hp MTUs, with a top speed of 24knots and a still useful range of 1700nm at 12knots with 23,000l (5059gal) tanks. Clearly, the tank sizes are the biggest influence on range, but the Benetti’s smaller engines look the more efficient package, burning around 95l/h at 10knots to the Azimut’s 163l/h, albeit at 12knots.

Interior

These two yachts share some spectacular next-generation interior design, full of organic curves, natural materials, glass and plenty of luxury. The exact layout and finish are open to customisation but both yachts let the salon breathe with plenty of space around free-standing furniture, massive windows and not a hard edge to be seen.

The Benetti uses the skeleton of a whale as the inspiration for its architectural ribbed design, huge glass sections pushing outboard of the ribs and a natural wood ceiling warming the interior. The Azimut luxuriates in one long social space, its main interior dining area found on the upper deck, with elegant curvaceous furniture, light fittings that seem almost alive, forming out of the deckhead, and organic fittings and sculptures especially made for the yacht. Again the entire, dream-like scene is surrounded by glass.

Both yachts then have an upper deck lounge, or skylounge, offering guests superb views and a private deck that runs seamlessly out with vast glass doors and windows creating the inside/outside feel everyone wants. Both can be laid out to suit your style with the Azimut having its dining area up here.

Accommodation

You will do well to choose between these two beautiful main deck Owner’s staterooms. Both offer the same calm, eco-luxury feel, the Benetti continuing its ribbed style, inlaid with natural timbers, the Azimut perhaps more stylised with floating furniture and wonderfully deep glass sections to each side. Both yachts have very similar layouts that push the ensuites forward into the bows. The design leaves the most space possible for the cabins with studies, lounges and walk-in wardrobes all worked in.

Four more cabins are below decks, again with a similar layout that creates two doubles and two twins, although exact cabin configurations are open to the Owner’s needs. The Azimut also offers an upper deck cabin option making this a six-cabin yacht. A versatile space with great views, it can also be used as a Captain’s cabin or done away with entirely for a larger lounge.

Crew quarters are found forward, below decks, located via the main deck galley. The Benetti has seven berths and a crew mess, an important feature, while the Azimut has six berths as standard, an optional crew mess reducing that number to five.

Helm Station

These yachts feature proper separate raised bridges with the Captain enjoying a vast expanse of screens set before excellent forward visibility. Guests or crew can also join the Captain on longer passages.

The Benetti has a dedicated Captain’s cabin and study aft of the helm, the Azimut has the option of creating a cabin off the upper deck, making for a happy Captain.

Deck Areas

Both yachts create a clever and very useable fourth deck, as part of the tri-deck design. The Azimut has an aft mezzanine terrace that not only creates an entire extra deck to enjoy but also makes the main deck aft feel that much more private. From here, steps lead to a private upper deck running off the skylounge and a full sundeck to be finished to the Owner’s desires.

The Benetti has a traditional aft deck design, the broad open main deck leading to a huge upper deck with dining forward and an open lounge aft. We then go up again to the sundeck, only this sundeck has a steering position and hardtop, the latter being significant because Benetti has created an observation deck above, a spectacular retreat up in the heavens, nestled amongst the yacht’s navigational hardware.

Beach Club

The Azimut Grande Trideck delivers a proper superyacht beach club, one of the biggest and best you will find under 50m, with a vast terrace, seating, bar and changing facilities set behind a ribbed teak wall.

The Benetti doesn’t quite hit full beach club levels, but it does offer some fun waterside features with a fold-out terrace and shell-like awning that folds out to create a sense of place and shade.

Both yachts have managed to create a decent space aft by pushing the tender garage forward, opening to starboard.

Compare Layouts

Both of these yachts are semi-custom and each builder has created a quite exceptional and unique design for you to personalise as you wish. Most of the obvious differences inside, like the dining areas, can easily be accommodated on either yacht.

Overall, these two yachts share very similar layouts, the decks being the most different in key areas.

The Motopanfilo manages to deliver four traditionally defined levels, capped by that neat observation deck. The Azimut has its far less conventional and very clever mezzanine that creates a massive aft terrace and makes the main deck far more inviting.

Inside, the main differences are the standard Captain’s cabin and crew mess for the Benetti, although the Azimut can deliver these features without any fuss or sacrifice.
