Speed is, of course, a prerequisite in this sector but these boats go about things quite differently. The Azimut's modified Vee planing hull uses triple 1000hp pod drive propulsion to deliver an easy 34knot top speed. The Pershing 8X, weighing in some 10 tonnes more, uses twin 2400hp MTU engines for a massive 45 knots using spectacular surface drives.

Performance

These are both sporty, performance yachts, but where the Azimut delivers a useful 34 knots with its triple pod drives the Pershing blasts ahead with close to 50 knots and throws in a couple of rooster tails for good measure. It takes a lot of horsepower for those extra knots, 4800hp in total, and you will likely be cruising at very similar speeds on both yachts, but if you want out-and-out speed the Pershing delivers.

Interior

Both yachts create a flow of social space on one level, running from the helm stations through to spacious aft decks. With overhead sunroofs and huge sections of glass, the feeling in the deck saloons is light, bright and very sophisticated. The Azimut has a flowing cohesive salon design with facing seating in the main salon and a wraparound dining area forward. The Pershing opts for a U-shape sofa design with a small dining area forward.

Accommodation

Both yachts have a very similar four-cabin layout, with the full-beam Owner’s cabins near identical in design. Each stateroom has an aft en suite, hull-side windows and dressing areas.

Helm Station

Inside, the Azimut and Pershing deliver tour de force helm stations, beautifully considered and delivering a real driver’s boat feel. The 8X helm makes more of a statement, with triple helm seats in a central position. Things are more interesting on the sports bridge deck, where you can opt for no watering position at all on the Pershing. If you do want to drive up top (and who wouldn’t?) you get the same purposeful triple helm seat up. The Azimut delivers a very smart twin helm station.

Deck Areas

The aft decks on these yachts are true luxury lounges, with long seeps of seating and sun pads set within architectural styling that mixes stainless steel teak and carbon fibre. Deep safe decks lead to similarly opulent forward lounges. As with its sportsbridge, the Azimut’s decks work the harder with more specification and features.

Flybridge

The Azimut S8’s sportsbridge feels very much the luxury flybridge deck, with its wet bar and lounge seating. The Pershing feels different, from its spectacular sweep of stairwell, to the sportsbridge itself, which feels more like a sundeck, especially if you don’t option in the helm station.

Compare Layouts

The layouts of the Azimut S8 and Pershing 8X are very similar, from their tender garages to the foredeck lounges. The below decks accommodation is laid out in the same fashion, but it is the engine bay that makes a difference, the Azimut’s pod drives pushing its bay further aft allowing more space to be found for the cabins.
