Captains and Officers
Captain:
The captain holds the highest authority on the yacht and is responsible for overall navigation, safety, and operations. They make critical decisions and ensure the vessel adheres to maritime laws.
First Officer/Chief Mate:
The first officer is second in command and assists the captain in navigation, safety procedures, and overseeing the crew. They may take charge in the captain's absence and manage routine tasks related to navigation and watchkeeping.
Second Officer:
The second officer supports navigation tasks, maintains charts and navigational equipment, and often oversees safety drills. They assist the first officer and may be responsible for specific duties as assigned.
Third Officer:

Engineers
Engineers on a yacht are responsible for the maintenance and operation of the vessel's mechanical systems. They ensure that the engine, propulsion, electrical, and plumbing systems are in optimal condition. Engineers conduct regular inspections, perform repairs, and are prepared to troubleshoot any technical issues that may arise during the yacht's operation.
The chief engineer manages the engineering team, coordinates maintenance schedules, and handles major repairs. They lead all engineering operations on the yacht and advise the captain on its machinery, systems, and safety.
Chief engineers ensure the yacht complies with laws and regulations, crucial for passing surveys and inspections by authorities.
Within the engineering department, you may also find specialized technicians of Electro-Technical officers (ETOs), and AV/IT officers.
An ETO holds a position that encompasses any task onboard involved with electrical systems on Heating Ventilation Air conditioning (HVAC), High Voltage (HV), and sometimes Diesel Electric systems to ensure their safe operation.
AV/IT officers are responsible for a broad range of systems which generally encompasses interior automation, entertainment, IT, and certain satellite systems.
Typically, yachts measuring 70m in length employ an individual skilled in both ETO and AV/IT roles. Yachts exceeding 100m (330ft) in length generally feature dedicated professionals for each role, given the extensive scale of technology and systems aboard.
Purser
The purser manages administrative tasks on the yacht, handling finances, guest accounts, and crew payroll. They ensure smooth communication between the crew and maintain financial records.
In addition to managing administrative tasks, the purser plays a crucial role in guest services. They coordinate guest activities and handle reservations and transfers. The purser is also responsible for maintaining inventory, managing onboard accounts, and assisting with crew communication and logistics.
Chef and Galley Crew
Chef:
The chef is responsible for creating the meals for guests and crew. They plan menus, source ingredients, and ensure high culinary standards. The chef often collaborates with the steward(ess) team to provide exceptional dining experiences.
Sous Chef:
The sous chef supports the chef, overseeing kitchen operations and assisting in meal preparation. They may take charge in the chef's absence and contribute to menu planning.
Galley Staff/Cooks:
These crew members work alongside the chef and sous chef, handling various kitchen tasks such as food preparation, cooking, and cleaning. They play a vital role in maintaining the galley's efficiency.
On smaller yachts, the chef may also handle serving meals, or the role might be combined with that of the chief stewardess in a stew/cook position.
Interior Crew
The interior crew prioritizes guest experience and hospitality. On larger yachts, a chief steward(ess) oversees interior operations, manages the team, coordinates guest services, and handles some administrative tasks if no purser is present.
The team attends to guests, ensuring comfort and maintaining the interior's presentation. They handle tasks such as table setting, cabin preparation, serving meals, making drinks, and general service.
Depending on the yacht size, there might be a dedicated laundry crew within the interior team.
Deck Crew
A large deck crew is managed by a bosun. The bosun oversees deck operations and assists with various tasks, ensuring the yacht's exterior is well-maintained. They manage the deck crew and collaborate on activities like anchoring, docking, and water sports.
Deck crew assist in the overall maintenance and operation of the yacht's exterior. They handle tasks like mooring, anchoring, and watersports equipment setup, ensuring the deck is organized and guest-ready.

The Specialists
Yacht crews may encompass a variety of specialized roles, with some serving as full-time positions and others as supplementary responsibilities.
For instance, deck crew members often bring teaching qualifications into play, taking on an additional role as watersports instructors. Apart from their routine deck duties, they manage the setup of watersports gear, such as personal watercraft and paddleboards, for guest use. Beyond facilitating the activities, they provide instruction and oversee the activity to ensure safety.
When new technical equipment, like that for jet pack sports, is introduced onboard, the crew may undergo additional training—typically covered by the yacht—to attain a teaching qualification specific to that sport.
Additionally, deck crew members are often tasked with overseeing ship-to-shore guest transportation and the transfer of equipment to and from the yacht, particularly in the organization of beach picnics, barbecues, and shore events. Deck crew assigned to such duties will have specific driving qualifications ensuring they are experienced for such a role.
On larger superyachts, the inclusion of gym and exercise facilities is common. In such cases, a designated crew member, usually drawn from either the deck or interior team, often possesses additional qualifications and experience as a personal trainer. In situations where the yacht accommodates a substantial number of guests, the personal trainer may prioritize this role and assist with deck or interior duties as needed.
The interior team, comprising stewards(ess) and galley crew, undergoes specialized training in various aspects of hospitality. This includes expertise in guest events, table dressing, and mixology.
Helicopter pilots typically have a dedicated and distinct role within the crew structure, maintaining a specialized focus on helicopter operations. They often operate on a rotation basis within the crew, ensuring consistent coverage and expertise for any helicopter requirements.
To ensure a comprehensive guest service, the crew often includes professionals like nannies, beauty therapists, and massage therapists. Additionally, the crew may include security guards.
Specialist roles within the yacht crew may not always be full-time positions, with professionals often engaged through fixed-term contracts. The duration of these contracts can vary, ranging from short-term arrangements for specific charters to seasonal employment. The decision to bring in specialists on a contractual basis is typically influenced by factors such as the size of the yacht and the frequency of use by charter guests or the owner and their families.
Day Workers
Day workers are crew often employed on short-term contracts to assist with specific duties onboard. Their responsibilities can vary, from conducting a thorough deep clean of the yacht after a prolonged charter to taking on specific maintenance tasks like varnishing teak or polishing stainless.
During a hectic charter season, the full-time crew appreciates the arrival of day workers. This allows them a brief break to recharge before the next guests arrive.
