Delivered in 1948, Albacora is a 44.7m motor yacht built by Wilton Fijenoord. Her interior design comes from the drawing boards of Studio Angeletti, while Wilton Fijenoord is responsible for her naval architecture.

Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 6.77m beam and a 2.15m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 283 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Exterior Design

The exterior design of Albacora is both functional and visually pleasing. The yacht features a raked bow, which enhances its aerodynamic efficiency and contributes to its sleek profile. The hull and superstructure are painted in a clean, white color, offering a uniform and polished appearance. Below the deck, the black color provides a striking contrast, adding a touch of understated elegance. 

The teak-laid decks are a significant modification from the original utilitarian design, offering a robust yet inviting surface for outdoor activities. The aft deck is fitted with a ten-seater mahogany table and director chairs, making it suitable for informal dining and social gatherings. Deck furniture is made of cane, upholstered in blue gingham, adding a traditional touch.

On the foredeck, the large brass and bronze anchor windlass stands out as a prominent feature, both functional and visually appealing. This equipment, along with other original fittings, has been carefully maintained to preserve the yacht’s historical integrity. The boat deck houses two Sea Ray 5.6m power boats, providing practical functionality for excursions.

Above the bridge, a small teak-laid sun deck offers additional space for relaxation and sunbathing. The exterior ensures a blend of historical character and modern necessities, making the Albacora a practical choice for those who appreciate traditional yacht design.

Interior Design

The main saloon is furnished in an English Country house style, with ceilings and walls paneled in mahogany. These were previously French polished but are now varnished for practicality. The room includes a comfortable U-shaped settee upholstered in floral fabric, designed to accommodate large gatherings. Six windows provide natural light and can be fully opened by winding them down into stainless steel boxes built into the superstructure. Louvered mahogany shutters can be raised to darken the room while maintaining ventilation. The main saloon also features a movie screen that can be unrolled from an overhead compartment, a sideboard, and a modern stereophonic system with color television and multi-system video.

Forward of the saloon, the steward's pantry leads to the dining saloon, also paneled in mahogany. This room seats ten around a 1.8-meter diameter circular table, creating a cozy atmosphere for dining.

The helm retains much of its original equipment, including a vast traditionally-spoked wheel fitted with a folding brass spigot. The original brass and chrome engine controls have been refurbished and re-cabled. Modern additions such as an electrically operated helm, a Robertson autopilot, and state-of-the-art communications equipment are subtly integrated. The original Decca radar is complemented by a modern color set, maintaining the traditional look while enhancing functionality.

Accommodation

Albacora can host a total of 10 guests across five cabins. The owner's suite is located forward of the dining saloon. This stateroom reflects the elegance of the great pre-war ocean liners. It features a double bed raised on a mahogany plinth, accompanied by a curved mahogany writing desk and dressing table on either side. Despite its smaller portholes, the room is kept bright with a white textured headlining. The en-suite bathroom is fitted with a bath, bidet, and head, and is lined in mahogany. An additional smaller head to port has been repurposed as extra wardrobe space, replacing the original shower unit.

Descending from the main saloon via a gently curving stair, guests will find further accommodation comprising one double cabin and three twin cabins. Each cabin is equipped with en-suite facilities, except for one which has a shower room instead. The interiors of these cabins are furnished in a 'country manor' style, with matching floral fabrics adorning the walls and bed covers. This décor lends a homely, traditional feel to the space, reminiscent of an English country house.

Located beside the main galley in the forward part of the lower deck, the crew mess provides a communal space. The crew cabins are spacious, with most offering en-suite shower and head facilities. Additionally, the crew quarters open out onto the foredeck, which is partly covered with an awning, providing a private outdoor area for the crew.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3408 C DITA) 8-cylinder 480hp engines running at 1800rpm, motor yacht Albacora is capable of reaching a top speed of 15 knots, and comfortably cruises at 13 knots. With her 30,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,376 nautical miles at 10 knots.
