Delivered in 2007, Bystander is an award winning 138'5" classic yacht built by JFA Chantier Naval. Her interior design and exterior styling comes from the drawing boards of Rhoades Young, while Vripack is responsible for her naval architecture.
Design & Construction
Designed around a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 30' beam and a 8'2" draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 560 GT (Gross Tonnes).
The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the yacht, Bystander, reflects a blend of rugged functional and classic elegance. The forward profile resembles a workboat, characterized by a high bow and steep stem, contributing to its sturdy appearance. The superstructure's weight is concentrated forward, allowing for expansive working decks at the aft.
The forward section maintains a robust look with its painted superstructure and high bulwarks. Moving aft, the design transitions to incorporate more yacht-like features, such as timber-framed windows and panelled bulkheads in the social areas. The pilothouse is raised half a deck above the bridge, providing excellent visibility and creating a technical space below.
Ship's boats, substantial chase boat RIBs, are stored aft and can be launched using traditional davits. Forward of the Portuguese bridge are wooden sailing dinghies, which are launched and recovered via masts and booms mounted fore and aft. The funnel serves as a storage area and a design element, equipped with a smoke machine to mimic steam, along with a classic ship's whistle, operated by compressed air.
The monkey island includes a crow's nest and modern navigational equipment that blend with the 1930s style. The upper deck features full walk-around access, while the bridge deck is accessible through doors adjacent to the pilot cabin. The ship's exterior is complemented by a teak planked floor that matches the deck camber, leading to a large external dining table with a bronze casting of Velsheda’s sail number. The aft deck includes a Jacuzzi and wooden furniture, both loose and fixed.
Interior Design
The interior design of the yacht Bystander embraces a rather specific classic design - a1930s workboat that was refitted for private use. Materials used throughout the yacht include broad plank wooden floors and elements of the original Bystander, which serve as a backdrop to the panelled bulkheads and beamed overheads.
In select areas, the detailing is elevated to highlight important spaces, while pieces of free-standing furniture are strategically placed to create a less formal atmosphere. The large deck saloon stands out as a significant social space, designed to be opened up to the aft deck, thus creating an expansive area for both spectating and entertaining. This design choice enhances the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, catering to a dynamic social environment.
The helm features an interesting blend of old and new, with original elements such as an engine telegraph paired with modern Caterpillar electronic engine controls. These components are integrated through a system of belts and pulleys, allowing for control of the yacht's engines in a manner reminiscent of earlier times.
The galley and service areas are designed to function independently from the guest areas, ensuring that both parties can operate without interference. The overall design maintains a focus on practicality while incorporating subtle antique detailing. Elements such as rotary Bakelite lamp switches are custom-made and treated to appear authentic, contributing to the yacht's distinctive aged appearance. This approach extends to metal items throughout the interior, which are distressed to enhance the vintage look.
Lounges and salons on the yacht include both a forward lounge with panoramic views and a sky lounge designed to open fully to the elements. The latter features windows that lower using leather straps and metal handles, allowing for a versatile space that adapts to various weather conditions. Both lounges are equipped with traditional peaked houses and mechanical louvered wooden slat blinds, operated by bronze wheels, adding to the yacht's authentic character.
