Owner's Brief

The origins of Gonca are mostly unknown - there are no pre-war records and the only information available is the yacht herself. The engine has markings that show it was made in Britain in the early 20th century.

How did they do it?

Rahmi M Koç, born in 1930 in Ankara, is known for his vast collection of industrial & navigational artifacts, and he acquired Gonca in 1989. His passion for historical vessels led to the restoration of Gonca, with his personal involvement at every step.

Restoration Challenges

Camper & Nicholsons handled the technical project, while Ken Freivokh Design crafted the interiors. Gonca lay abandoned on a sandy beach so students from Istanbul University had to trace the hull's contours in the sand during initial inspection. Restoring the steam engines, boilers & machinery fell to Ian Clark. RMK Marine, a Koç company, undertook the delicate restoration work, including the renovation of steel hull plates, carpentry works & new teak-laid decks.

Completed in 1997, Gonca met international safety standards while preserving her historical spirit. Chanel even chartered her in 2009 for a commercial starring Audrey Tautou.

The story behind the launch name 'Gonca'

Gonca means 'flower bud' in Turkish.
