Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 6.7m beam and a 2.95m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 165 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Exterior Design

The exterior design of Tarmo is functional and robust, reflecting its origins as a Finnish expedition vessel built in 1963 and rebuilt in 1997. The round bilge steel hull, designed by the Finnish government, provides a stable and smooth ride in challenging sea conditions. The hull and superstructure are constructed of thick steel—eight millimeters for the hull and six millimeters for the superstructure and deck plates—making the vessel highly durable.

The upper deck features practical elements such as the entrance to the engine room and a canoe-shaped stern. The stern design improves performance in following or quartering seas, reducing stern waves and enhancing stability. The high bulwarks and wide side decks add to the feeling of safety and security when moving around the vessel, especially in rough conditions.

The deck includes a sauna with direct access to the sea for cooling off. The bow area is equipped with two Clipper 250 anchors and a windlass, protected by a blue cover, operating on 380 volts. The high threshold doors and flared gunnels are designed to keep water off the deck, essential for heavy-weather passage making.

The Tarmo's bridge offers excellent visibility due to numerous windows, an uncommon feature for vessels of its age. The bridge includes a raised seating area for guests and essential equipment for long-range cruising, such as a Furuno color video sounder, forward-looking depth sounder, and Furuno color fish finder. The vessel has one radar and a large chart table for traditional navigation.

The bridge roof, accessible via a temporary ladder, features a helm station with hydraulic controls and a radar mast that can be lowered. This area also includes a windshield for added comfort during operation. The canoe-shaped stern offers better performance in following or quartering seas by reducing stern waves and enhancing stability.

Interior Design

The main saloon is expansive, featuring a bar area that is well-suited for entertaining guests. The headroom in this space is 1.9 meters, providing ample room for movement. Aluminum portholes and windows allow for plenty of natural light, ensuring that the interior remains bright even in adverse weather conditions.

The galley is equipped with wood countertops and a stainless steel sink, providing a practical workspace for meal preparation. The galley includes a four-burner electric hob, an oven, a microwave, and both a fridge and a freezer. Additional cold storage is available, ensuring that provisions can be kept fresh over long voyages.

The helm is designed for efficiency and ease of use, with a Furuno color video sounder, a forward-looking depth sounder, and a color fish finder. The helm station is equipped with all the essential tools for long-range cruising, including a radar and a large chart table for those who prefer paper navigation. The numerous windows in the wheelhouse provide excellent visibility, a crucial feature for navigation.

The lounges and salons are practical in design, with the main saloon offering multiple seating areas for relaxation and socializing. The entertainment area includes a TV, conveniently located next to the bar. The design ensures that guests can enjoy the seascapes regardless of the weather outside. Central heating, both electric and diesel, ensures comfort throughout the vessel.

Accommodation

The yacht Tarmo offers a robust and comfortable living environment for up to 16 guests. This vessel features seven spacious cabins, all designed to ensure a comfortable stay during long voyages.

The Owner's Suite is a full-beam cabin located aft. It features a double bed positioned on the starboard side, complemented by ample natural light through decently sized windows. The suite includes significant hanging locker space and a dedicated area to catch up on work or emails. The ensuite bathroom is equipped with a toilet, sink, and additional storage space, making it a practical and private retreat.

The guest accommodation is thoughtfully spread out across the vessel:-

Double Cabins: There are multiple double cabins, each featuring comfortable berths, functional workspaces, and generous natural light from large portholes. These cabins also include ensuite bathrooms with showers and standard amenities. 

Twin Cabins: The yacht also offers twin cabins with bunk bed configurations, providing flexible sleeping arrangements. These cabins are well-lit and include functional desks for added convenience.

She is also capable of carrying up to four crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Performance & Capabilities

The yacht Tarmo is propelled by a single Caterpillar engine, delivering 450 horsepower (331 kW). The engine employs a closed keel cooling system, which ensures efficient cooling and reliability during extended voyages.

Tarmo offers a top speed of 11 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 9 knots. At cruising speed, the yacht consumes around 30 liters of fuel per hour. Equipped with a substantial fuel capacity of 12,600 liters (approximately 3,330 US gallons), Tarmo' can achieve a significant range of about 4,000 nautical miles. Reducing the speed to 8 knots increases the range, potentially exceeding 5,000 nautical miles, making it an excellent vessel for long-range exploration.

A notable feature is the 380-volt, 40-horsepower Corkman bow thruster. This powerful bow thruster enhances maneuverability, especially in tight or challenging docking situations.

The yacht is equipped with two primary Perkins generators, each providing a 40 kW output at approximately 1500 RPM, with around 2000 hours of use. Additionally, there is a 10 kVA Yanmar generator. These generators ensure reliable power supply for all onboard systems during extended voyages.

Tarmo features a dry exhaust system, which offers several benefits, including reduced noise levels during operation and minimized cabin heat, as the exhaust gases are expelled directly through mufflers. This design feature contributes to a quieter and more comfortable onboard experience, particularly during long passages.
