Built by Damen Yachting and launched in 2016, AXIS is a standout example of the Damen YS 5009 model. Designed to support larger superyachts, she carries additional toys, tenders, and equipment, expanding the capabilities of any fleet she joins.
The 55-meter Damen Yacht Support vessel, AXIS, was commissioned by Carl Allen, a businessman and philanthropist dedicated to ocean exploration and conservation. As part of Allen Exploration, AXIS served as a support vessel for scientific research and underwater discovery, often operating alongside the 50-meter Westport motor yacht, Gigi. She is one of six vessels in the Damen YS 5009 series, which includes notable support yachts like Better Space and Gene Chaser.
A Design Built for Adventure
An expansive helipad supports helicopters weighing up to 3,700 kilograms, while a Heila deck crane with a 16-ton capacity handles tenders, submersibles, and heavy equipment. For adventurous buyers, AXIS even has room to carry a Triton 3300/3 submersible for deep-sea exploration, offered as a separate option. A fueling station capable of storing 6,000 liters of aviation or tender fuel further enhances her versatility.
With a top speed of 20 knots, a cruising speed of 16 knots, and a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles, AXIS is built for extended voyages. Her four Caterpillar 3512C TA diesel engines deliver nearly 6,000 horsepower, ensuring reliable performance across open waters. Whether crossing oceans or navigating remote locations, the support vessel for sale delivers both power and endurance.
Though primarily a support vessel, AXIS doesn’t compromise on comfort. Accommodations include three cabins for up to eight guests, complemented by space for 11 crew members to ensure seamless operations. Damen Yachting’s interior design prioritizes functionality without sacrificing the comfort needed for long-term missions.
The yacht’s sharp axe bow not only gives her a striking profile but also improves stability and seakeeping, making her a reliable choice in various conditions. A shallow draft of just 3.66 meters allows her to cruise in areas with shallow waters, like the Bahamas, adding to her appeal for diverse itineraries.
