Azimut Benetti contributes to project for environmentally-friendly manufacturing approach

The private yachting group supported the “Paint-It Project”, aimed at developing non-toxic antifouling coatings.

The Azimut Benetti Group has recently taken part in an innovative environmentally-focused project that has begun to develop non-toxic antifouling coatings for use in the marine industry and beyond.

The European “Paint-It Project” is a major international research effort, co-financed by the European Union and supported by several leading industry stakeholders, including Azimut Benetti.

It is expected that the results of the project will not be limited to just the yachting industry, and will also be able to be used in civil engineering, wastewater treatment plants and other industrial production processes.

The Azimut Benetti Group Research and Development Office explain how the non-toxic coatings work:

“[The coatings] feature a high level of environmental sustainability, because no biocides harmful to aquatic species are released into the marine environment, unlike traditional antifouling coatings, which leach biocides based on the toxic action of copper compounds and other similar organic/metallic substances.

“As well as eliminating biocides, these coatings also have significant environmental impact in terms of lower energy use, greenhouse gas generation and waste production, by reducing the need for hull maintenance, and of greatly reduced C02 emissions.”

Azimut’s support for the “Paint-It Project” is part of a broader environmental sustainability project adopted by the Azimut Benetti Group. Other factors it focuses on include the sustainability of its supply chain, the application of technological solutions in terms of hull shape, propulsion systems and material choice, yacht disposal processes and the sponsorship of various associations that aim to control and reduce the impact of the industry on the environment.

The Azimut Benetti Group is the world’s largest private group in the yachting sector. It encompasses six separate shipyards and two iconic yachting brands. Between its brands, it covers almost the entire market. Azimut makes motor yachts from 10m (32.8ft) to 40m (131.2ft) in length, whereas Benetti is focused on superyachts of 30m or longer.
