Sanlorenzo to Present SD96 and SX88 at PIBS 2025

At this year's Palma International Boat Show (PIBS), the Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo is set to present two models that reflect the breadth of their design capabilities.

The Sanlorenzo PIBS 2025 line-up will include the  SD96 and SX88, each representing a different philosophy while remaining rooted in Sanlorenzo’s core principles of liveability, design coherence, and engineering detail.

The SD96: Evolving Tradition with Modular Design

The Sanlorenzo SD96 is a 28m motor yacht that introduces a more flexible approach to the classic semi-displacement format. As the entry point into Sanlorenzo’s SD range, it replaces the earlier Sanlorenzo SD92 and provides a better integration of both long-range capability and onboard comfort.

The profile of the superyacht, developed by Zuccon International Project, maintains the SD line’s characteristic proportions while adopting subtle updates. Inside, the design is the result of a first-time collaboration with Patricia Urquiola, whose work introduces a calm, textural interior with a focus on modularity

A central staircase, combining bronzed metal and travertine, connects all three decks and serves as a visual anchor. Above, the sky lounge can operate as a cinema, dining space, or lounge, thanks to flexible furnishings and fully opening windows.

On the lower deck, a sliding panel system enables one area to be converted from a lounge to a VIP cabin. Two additional guest cabins are also found on this level. The owner’s suite, located on the main deck, benefits from wide windows and carefully integrated detailing that maintains a connection to the surrounding seascape.

Throughout, Urquiola’s approach blends comfort and material clarity with understated finishes and functional design. Furnishings have been adapted to meet marine requirements while maintaining high aesthetic standards.

The SX88: Sanlorenzo’s Open-Concept Crossover

The Sanlorenzo SX88 approaches yacht design from a different angle. At 27 metres, it bridges the gap between a traditional flybridge and an explorer yacht. Its layout and structure are shaped by the idea of spatial openness and connection between interior and exterior spaces.

Naval architecture is by Lou Codega, while the exterior styling was handled by Officina Italiana Design. The carbon-fibre superstructure and high bow contribute to a profile that is both assertive and efficient. All control functions are located on the flybridge, which can be fully enclosed and climate controlled. This arrangement frees the main deck for uninterrupted interior space.

Interior design on the first unit was led by Piero Lissoni. His scheme reflects a minimalist, architectural sensibility, with emphasis on linear detailing and open sightlines. Glass is used extensively to promote natural light and visual openness.

Two layout configurations are available: an open-plan format or an owner’s suite on the main deck. In either case, the interior remains fluid and continuous. At the stern, the motor yacht features a 30-square-metre beach area that doubles as a garage for a tender and water toys. Handling systems are discreetly integrated into the design.

Sustainability is also a key consideration. The SX88 incorporates lithium battery systems, low-consumption technologies, and enhanced insulation, allowing for several hours of zero-emissions operation. These features have earned the model RINA’s Green Class classification.

Designed for Different Ownership Styles

While the SD96 and SX88 share common design values, they appeal to distinct ownership preferences. The SD96 is aimed at those seeking a traditional cruising yacht with flexible interiors and long-range potential. The SX88, on the other hand, caters to owners prioritising open-plan living, frequent anchorage use, and a more informal lifestyle on board.

Both yachts are built using contemporary construction techniques and incorporate detailed craftsmanship throughout. Their contrasting layouts offer different ways of experiencing time on the water, reinforcing Sanlorenzo’s commitment to a varied and responsive design portfolio.

According to YachtBuyer Market Watch, Sanlorenzo has over 100 yachts currently in their order book; 3 of these are from the Sanlorenzo SD96, while 5 are from the Sanlorenzo SX88.

PIBS 2025 as a Platform for Broader Design Thinking

Sanlorenzo’s participation at the Palma International Boat Show signals more than a product showcase. The inclusion of two such different yachts underlines the shipyard’s ability to interpret owner needs through distinct design narratives. Whether through the spatial adaptability of the SD96 or the crossover utility of the SX88, both models reflect an ongoing dialogue between function, style, and evolving expectations at sea.
