The Cranchi M44HT is the entry-level model in the sport yacht-style Hardtop range from this Italian builder. A long-standing model in the range, the M44HT offers a typical mix of interior and deck options for a yacht of this size, with two cabins and a sheltered salon. Intended for Owner-operation and weekend cruising, power comes from a pair of 400hp Volvo Penta D6 engines running on sterndrives and delivering a top speed of 35knots.

Another Italian yacht, the Sessa C44 is a more recent model running on Volvo Penta IPS drives but otherwise lays down a very similar package of design, layout and performance to the Cranchi. Almost identical in its dimensions and sharing the same designer as the Cranchi, the Sessa C44 offers another two-cabin, four-berth layout with weekending and cruising by the Owner.

Performance

These two Italian stallions offer strong 35-knot top speeds from deep-V planing hulls. The Cranchi’s older design is reflected in a twin sterndrive set-up, its twin 400hp Volvo Penta D6 engines offer a useful cruising range with the builder suggesting a 28-knot cruising speed. The Sessa runs on IPS pod drives, again using the D6 block but this time the lower 370hp variant. But it still hits a 36-knot max and 28-knot cruising speed, with smooth joystick control for close-quarter maneuvers. Both yachts offer very similar fuel capacities and ranges.

Interior

Both of these yachts go for a sportier, sleeker hardtop style, as opposed to the more accomodating coupe. This creates an open deck salon that blends with the aft cockpit and can be made to feel very much the outdoor space with the sunroof open, the Cranchi’s sunroof being huge.

The open, on-deck feeling of the two upper salons can be swapped for something more private with both yachts offering a lower salon that can also be converted into an occasional berth.

Accommodation

Where these two differ most noticeably is with the cabins. While both offer a two cabin, two toilet and shower compartment layout, the Cranchi has a forward Owner’s cabin and twin guest cabin amidships, whereas the Sessa ekes out a clever Owner’s cabin amidships leaving space for a VIP-style guest cabin forward, in effect creating two double cabins.

Helm Station

Very similar in style and specification, both helm positions have space for two people ahead of a narrow helm console with a single MFD. Visibility looks good, particularly with the sunroof open when the skipper can go for full wind-in-the-hair mode.

Deck Areas

At this size, you do not have a forward cockpit, only a sun pad, so all the seating is found aft. With the salon flowing seamlessly out on the deck, an aft sun pad sits over the tender garage, where a tender of around 2.2m can be stowed. An optional hydraulic swim platform can then be employed to help with launch and recovery. On either side of the garage both yachts employ twin stairwells, allowing each deck access.

Compare Layouts

Aside from the differing cabin designs, these yachts follow a similar layout with the sports yacht-style cockpits moving from the shelter of the hardtop to an open deck sun pad and tender garage. The Sessa offers an optional all-seater cockpit design that does away with the sun pad and garage, creating a very open, social aft cockpit.
