Fairline Targa 65 GT
vs.
Princess V65 Mk3

Here we have two pedigree British sports yachts going head-to-head. Big, powerful crew-operated yachts designed for fast port-to-port cruises that the Owner will want to drive and enjoy the 30-knot performance on tap.

The Fairline Targa 65 GT and Princess V65 and the ranges they represent are rightly considered design standard-bearers, with very sharp progressive styling and plenty of space and luxury. Both are very closely matched when it comes to dimensions and space, although there are a few notable differences, not least in top speed.

Performance

As fast-planing yachts both the 65 GT and V65 are very capable high-speed performers. However, the Princess’ twin MAN V12-1400 engines, providing 2800hp, definitely give it the edge, maxing out at 38 knots. In fact, the cruising speed of the Princess V65 is quicker than the Targa's top speed.

The Fairline has two engines options, twin 1200hp MAN V8-1200 or twin 1136hp Caterpillar C18 ACERT E02 HP - U.S. EPA Tier 3 and IMO Tier II, which deliver a top speed of 32 knots.

Interior

Both of these yachts make good use of their interior space and both deliver galley aft salon designs. Both galleys are of a similar size and style and come with dining tables. The main difference being that the Fairline has the option of extra cabinetry or a dining area.

Further forward the Fairline has the ideal facing seating, the Princess has one U-shaped sofa and table with storage space opposite, directly behind the helm station.

There is little to choose between the two yachts when it comes to the split between indoor and outdoor space and certainly both do a good job of seamlessly merging inside and out with lots of glass and fully-opening cockpit doors. The Princess features a vast sunroof which, when opened alongside the expansive doors, creates one large living space from salon to cockpit. The Fairline is not to be outdone and too has a large, sliding, glazed sunroof.

Accommodation

The Fairline 65 GT and Princess V65 both deliver spacious full-beam Owner's cabins, located amidships. The 65 GT, making the most of its slightly wider beam, has two single large seats adjacent to the bed, where the Princess opts for one larger seating area. Both master cabins have large ensuites located aft with walk-in wardrobes.

The standard Fairline layout has three cabins, with a double and a twin as the berth arrangement. There is also the option of adding a fourth cabin.

The standard Princess layout has four cabins and the standard berth layout is a VIP and two twins with a mixture of ensuite and shared facilities.

Helm Station

The helm stations differ probably as much as any part of these two yachts. The Fairline 65 GT helm station has space for three screens and two separate free-standing helm seats with room enough to move easily between the two.

The Princess V65 has a smaller helm space with two screens and two seats directly next to each other with no gap between the seats to move into the interior space without disturbing your co-driver. However, there is a side door opening onto the exterior deck.

Deck Areas

These yachts are designed for outdoor, on-deck living. The Fairline Targa 65 GT and the Princess V65 have spacious foredecks both with u-shaped seating. The Fairline provides two separate sunpads, whereas the Princess has one larger spot with ample space for two people.

The aft cockpits of both are great places for socializing and dining, with their u-shaped sofas and tables. Both yachts create a bar area connecting to the galley, the 65GT adding two neat bar stools.

Whilst the Fairline perhaps has the larger aft cockpit, the Princess really makes the most of its space to provide a wonderful outdoor dining area.

Both yachts have hydraulic bathing platforms for tender launch or for water-babies to get closer to the water.

Compare Layouts

Both the Fairline and Princess are similar in layout and design, with very little to give across the board when it comes to proportions.

The standard Fairline layout has three cabins, with the option of adding a fourth cabin or a utility room. Whereas the standard Princess layout has four cabins. Both have single-crew cabins located aft.

Both feel open and airy and make good use of space.
