The Galeon 500 Fly is the Polish shipyard at its very best, challenging a highly competitive sector with a boat that tears up the rule book all over the place. It's dripping with clever ideas on deck but also packs in three good cabins including a spacious full-beam master ensuite amidships. It's available with three shaft drive engine options or Volvo Penta IPS. 

The Princess F50 is built in Plymouth, UK by Princess Yachts and designed in conjunction with Olesinki design, who handle styling and naval architecture. The boat has three cabins comprising two doubles and a set of bunks plus two bathrooms, one ensuite to the master. Powered by Volvo Penta IPS800 (600hp) for a top speed of over 35 knots, it's one of the best if not the best boat to drive in the class.

Performance

The Galeon is available with shafts and IPS but most will opt for the largest shaft drive option of twin Volvo Penta 725s for a top speed a whisker over 30 knots and a cruise in the low to mid twenties. If performance is a key consideration then the Princess should appeal because it's one of the fastest boats in the sector. It's only available with twin 600hp IPS800s but they're good for a top speed of 36 knots. It handles tidily, too.

Interior

The Galeon feels a quality product on the inisde and with such a wide variety of trim choices it's easier to personalise than the F50. The Princess sets the benchmark for quality and fit and finish in this sector and feels a properly high quality product. It's not as clever as the Galeon but it oozes class.

Accommodation

Both boats have three cabins, two-bathroom layouts with two double cabins and a third with bunk beds. The Princess is physically a smaller boat than the 500 so there isn't space for a crew cabin but the quality of the cabins is excellent and the scissor berths in the VIP cabin add some flexibility.

Helm Station

The Galeon's imposing dash is well laid out and ergonomically sound but the view isn't quite as good as the Princess's due to the large windscreen mullion. Later boats don't have analogue dials so the dash looks cleaner and more modern. The F50's helm looks classy and is much more compact than the Galeon's. It's clean, too, with most functions accessed through the twin MFDs.

Deck Areas

The Princess is a smaller boat than the Galeon so it's not really a fair fight but few boats can compete with the sprawling deck spaces of the clever 500 Fly. The Princess has a simple sun pad on its foredeck whereas the Galeon has modular seating with pop-up backrests and the option of a table. If you want a crew cabin on the Galeon you can't have the rotating dinette in the cockpit.

Flybridge

The F50's proportions are lovely but the compromise is a smaller flybridge. That said, Princess has been clever with the available space and has manged to include a wet bar so you can cook alfresco. The Galeon's flybridge is a really good size and it has the option of a fixed hard top with a sunroof if you don't want to wrestle with a canvas bimini.

Compare Layouts

Both boats have three cabins and favour an aft galley layout on the main deck. Note how the Princess's engines are mounted close to amidships with jackshafts connecting to the IPS pods in order to optimise weight distribution.

Rivals

Most mainstream manufacturers have a good 50ft flybridge in their range so competition for both boats is stiff. The Prestige 520 offers a good blend of style and value for money but if it's living space that you're interested in, the voluminous Absolute 47 Fly is a great bet. Sealine's F530 is practical and has a very spacious interior with the option to have a twins or a double in the third cabin.
