Azimut’s trawler-yacht-inspired Magellano range is all about long-distance cruising in style and comfort. The Magellano 53 delivers all the practicality and performance you want for serious cruising, with conventional shaft drives and a smooth-riding semi-displacement hull hitting a top speed of 23 knots but also enjoying a massive range of over 1000nm at 10 knots. The three-cabin layout features a full utility area for extra stores with easy operation for two people.

The Navetta is another, even more, modern take on the humble trawler yacht. Again, very much designed for serious cruising and Owner operation, the Navetta 52 has three large cabins and features a semi-displacement hull, this time running on pod drives for a 25 knots top speed but with a far lower range.

Performance

Both yachts are designed for versatile and comfortable cruising, with semi-displacement hulls that can hit 20+knot planing speeds but also run at displacement speeds for efficient long-distance passages. How they do this, though, is quite different. The Magellano 53 uses conventional shaft drives and twin 500hp Cummins QSC8.3 engines for a top speed of 23knots, but a big, 3200lt, fuel capacity means it has an impressive 1000nm range at displacement speeds. The Navetta 52 uses Volvo Penta IPS600 or IPS650 (435hp-480hp) pod drives to hit around 25knots, but smaller fuel tanks mean a range of around 350nm at displacement speeds, a figure that is more in line with flybridge norms.

Interior

The Magellano’s easy-going interior layout reflects its serious cruising ability, with a dedicated utility area for extra stores. The deck salon follows a simple, bright and open layout with the galley aft and a large U-shape sofa forward.

The Navetta also has a galley aft design with more space forward for facing lounge seating. Both galleys are well stocked with cabinet refrigerators and lots of stowage space.

Accommodation

The Magellano 53 features a full-beam cabin amidships and a similarly-sized cabin forward. Both are ensuite and feature large hull-side windows, either could be the Owner’s cabin. The Navetta’s Owner is very definitely heading to the full-beam midship cabin and will enjoy a central berth, sofa and lots of space. The forward VIP is very well conceived with an offset berth and big windows creating a midships feel.

The Azimut’s below deck utility area squeezes its third cabin into a bunked design whereas the Absolute manages a proper twin berth cabin.

Helm Station

Both the Azimut’s helm stations are simple affairs with space for a single seat and MFD. The Absolute’s lower helm has space for two seats and MFDs, with a very practical side deck door also worked in. On the Navetta’s flybridge, a single helm seat is flanked by wraparound guest seats.

Deck Areas

The Magellano 53 offers a very inviting aft deck with its own bar area connecting to the galley inside. There’s another great lounge on the foredeck, with deep safe seating. The Navetta 52 has a simple aft cockpit but enjoys massive glass doors that open up and connect the deck to the galley. Deep, safe decks lead forward to another lounge area with a bench and sunpad. On the transom, a fun barbecue and bar area can be optioned to take advantage of the large hydraulic swim platform.

Flybridge

The Magellano’s flybridge feels like a working deck, left clean and clear, to be used when underway. The aft is left open for stowage, U-shape seating set forward by the helm, allowing guests to join the skipper. The central mast is a great feature, adding some larger yacht charm and allowing antennae and comms an elevated position. The Navetta has a luxury flybridge feel with a central lounge area set beneath an optional hardtop. There is still space for a large open aft deck area, for storage or loungers.

Compare Layouts

Both of these yachts are three-cabin but their exterior designs greatly affect the overall interior space and layouts on offer. The more slender lines of the Magellano 53 create an easy-going layout of main deck salon and two double cabins. The decision to add a proper, liveaboard utility area below decks squeezing the third cabin. The bolder, more upright design of the Navetta 52 simply creates more space, with three good cabins and a big salon. There is rarely too much space on a yacht, so volume is king but if you want to liveaboard as a couple the Azimut’s layout has plenty going for it.
