Trawler Yachts For Sale

Trawler yachts have long been revered in the cruising yacht community, known for their practical and efficient design. Recently, these yachts have seen a resurgence in popularity, with top builders offering hybrid designs that blend traditional trawler values with modern touches. Trawler yachts are characterized by safe decks, spacious interiors, and excellent ride quality, prioritizing smooth and efficient passage-making over speed.

The design of trawler yachts focuses on practicality and style, featuring tall and elegant profiles that exude a classic yachting character. Typically, these yachts have semi-displacement hulls with keels for improved stability and fine entry hulls inspired by North Atlantic fishing boats. This combination of form and function ensures a stable and comfortable ride, making them ideal for long-distance cruising.

Buyers will find a variety of trawler yachts on the market. Used models often feature traditional elements like clinker-style topsides and solid wood interiors, reflecting their origins in regions where timber is abundant. New trawler yachts offer a range of styles, from classic designs to modern interpretations with sleek lines and contemporary aesthetics. Most trawlers fall within the owner-operated sector, making them excellent choices for cruising enthusiasts seeking reliability and comfort.

trawler yacht FAQ

We're committed to making yacht buying easier, so if you can't find what you're looking for just ask.

  • The trawler yacht may be based on the boats that worked the North Atlantic Ocean but that's where the fishing connection stops.

A modern luxury trawler is no more, or less, suited to a spot of fishing than any other motor yacht.  That is to say you can happily fish from the cockpit, as you can on, say, a flybridge yacht. But if offshore fishing is your thing, with all the batewells, rodholders and fighting chairs you desire, a sportsfisher is for you.

  • A trawler often comes with a soft riding semi-displacement hull that mixes fast cruising with efficient and stable passagemaking, at the expense of out-and-out top speeds.

Given that most flybridge owners will cruise way below their yachts' top speed for reasons of fuel economy and onboard comfort, a trawler yacht's lower top speed is no major loss, while the smooth ride is a major plus.

Ultimately, the cruising ability of a yacht comes down to its hull design and overall build, so a good flybridge yacht might be a better passagemaker than an average trawler.

  • Sometimes very little. Modern-day trawler yachts can be stylistically very similar to a flybridge. However, other models can be more loyal to their fishing boat forebears. But many trawlers do have a flybridge, so the connection is usually there.

Trawlers often differentiate themselves with tall superstructures and bow sections, an upright style, semi-displacement hulls, and more traditionally-toned interiors.

  • Trawler yacht construction has tended to be the preserve of smaller yards, focused on producing high-quality yachts in lower numbers. This has led to a reputation for higher, albeit deservedly so, pricing for a given hull length.

These higher prices are often joined by good residual values, so any extra outlay is often protected.

More recently, mainstream builders have joined the trawler market, with contemporary interpretations that deliver trawler style and practicalities with no added premium.
