Superyachts For Sale

A superyacht is as much about attitude as it is size, with style, luxury, and status all part of the mix. That said, there is no escaping the size and scale of superyachts, both figuratively and actually.

The ultimate expression of yachting capability, superyachts have gotten progressively and, in some cases, spectacularly bigger over the last 20 years. For some, superyachts start at 24m, (where build and operation requirements change) but as yachts have increased in size, it Is perhaps more relevant to think of a superyacht as being a 30m plus vessel.

A sea of styles

A superyacht can be pretty much any style, from modernist to classical, sleek to architectural, fast or slow. But the term super should always apply to quality and ability, so while some superyachts might be focused on speed and port-to-port blasts, and others offering true trans-ocean range, any superyacht worthy of the name should be a highly capable vessel built to the highest standards. This can include environmental matters, with advanced propulsion and ancillary systems to reduce emissions.

There are certain features that evolve as the yacht size increases. For instance, at 30m there is the option to move the master stateroom from below, up to the main deck. At 40m or 50m a tri-deck design becomes possible, with three exterior decks creating significantly more interior and deck space plus the option of a sky lounge. Above 50m, full beach clubs are to be found. Above 50m or 60m and the buyer can have almost any feature they wish, from helicopter pads to full private Owner's decks.

Buying a superyacht

Buying a new or used superyacht means you are entering into full crew operation, with a dedicated Captain. Buying a 'new' superyacht creates the opportunity for your own unique design, a so-called full custom build. Alrernatively, you can opt for a proven exterior design with a highly customised on-board layout and finish. In both cases a designer can be employed to realise your yachting ambitions.

As to which builder you choose, there are literally hundreds of shipyards around the world with superyacht-level capabilities. Which one is right for you will come down to location, cost, delivery times (the builder you like most may have a very long lead time, are you willing to wait?), style, and, of course, reputation.

superyacht FAQ

We're committed to making yacht buying easier, so if you can't find what you're looking for just ask.

  • The short answer is nothing, it is a marketing term used to add extra emphasis to a yacht. A more considered response would be that some people felt the need to shift from super to mega in order to convey the idea of an even larger vessel. But given that a superyacht is and always will stand for scale and excellence the term mega seems unnecessary.

Indeed, for many, when a superyacht gets to a certain size, specification and, perhaps, notoriety, it is more likely to be described as simply a yacht, not needing any grammatical emphasis to impress.

Because Mega is a marketing term, it is often used to describe yachts that barely meet superyacht criteria.

  • The main difference is size. Superyachts are generally the largest type of yacht, although explorer yachts and SUVs can be equally big, if not even larger.

A superyacht can start above 24m (79ft), where crew operation and operating licences begin, but it is more apt to say that the superyacht market kicks into gear at 30m (98ft).

For some people, a superyacht is still a yacht, and they're right. Yachts can be many shapes and sizes, which is why different yacht types exist, to help us better describe and break down the market.

  • Yachts of between 24m and 30m can conform to many different designs and genres - flybridge, SUV, catamaran, sports yacht, and more besides. Yachts over 30m are more likely to fall into the superyacht category, but can also be SUVs and explorers.

A sailing yacht over 30m can be described as a superyacht, but often sticks to its sailing moniker. Similarly, a classic yacht over 30m can be considered super, but often refrains from such contemporary attitudes.

  • Any vessel over 24m might be described as a superyacht, and certainly above 30m this is the common term. But a superyacht can also run way past 100m, creating a vast price range.

In terms of cost and scale, comparing a 30m yacht to one of 100m is like putting a one-bedroom apartment next to a skyscraper. Add in a similarly wide age-range and you have a question that amounts to that famous piece of string.

A superyacht can cost perhaps a million Euros or Dollars, or more likely run into tens of millions. Importantly, the cost of a superyacht also runs to its maintenance and crew, which can easily amount to hundreds of thousands or millions each year.

  • The number of yacht crew directly relates tro the size of the vessel, and, to a lesser degree, the  level of use you plan to put it to.

For a yacht of 30m-40m, with leisure use including weekends and the odd longer cruise, a crew of around five to seven will suffice.

Move to 60m or 70m and 12 or more crew will be required, while at 90m or 100m, with the likelihood of full year-round operation, and the figure will rise considerably, to 30-plus  crew.

If you plan to cruise extensively or charter your yacht for long periods it may be necessary to employ more crew. It is not uncommon for larger yachts to have two full crews or Captains, working monthly or seasonal rotas.

  • Build times will vary depending on two main criteria, the size of the yacht the and the level of customisation.

A full custom yacht will take longer to construct than a so-called platform build, a yacht that utilises a proven exterior design with a heavily personalised interior.

But it is a the size of the yacht that mainly decides the overall build time.

    Approximated build times

    30m - 40m 2 years
    50m - 60m 3 years
    70m plus 3 - 4 years

These build times will vary, with some 40m yachts avaialble in perhaps 12 months and a highly customised 50m taking four years.

  • Superyachts worthy of the name will be exceptionally well-built and highly capable vessels, but they might not necessarily be capable of true, trans-ocean passagemaking.

True trans-ocean capability is perfectly possible in yachts of 30m, although the chances are that yachts of this size were not constructed or specified to do so. Indeed, most yachts under 60m will be focused on coastal cruising, port-to-port voyages of perhaps a few hundred miles.

Fuel capacity is the major issue. Even on larger yachts, the hull and build might well be capable of longer passages but fuel capacities and engines designed for faster speeds over shorter distances might reduce range.

If you truly desire globe-trotting performance and ability, sailing yachts should be under consideration, as well as full displacement superyachts and explorer yachts with ranges that push well past 5000nm.
