The used or brokerage superyacht market is a world onto itself, with specialist brokerage houses offering a wide selection of owned vessels, similar to how the real estate or estate agency market works.
A typical brokerage superyacht transaction might see the selling broker marketing a yacht, with the buyer being introduced by another brokerage house. This broker-to-broker transaction is one of the idiosyncrasies of the used superyacht market, and lends itself to a network of relationships, indeed some superyacht sales occur without the yacht in question ever becoming publicly available.
With superyachts covering an incredibly wide range of sizes, styles and values, this is a wonderfully diverse market. Styles include sailing, classic, performance, contemporary, and, sometimes, undefinable yachts. Sizes run from 24m to well over 100m while price ranges are so broad as to be entirely unrelatable.
When buying a used superyacht, there is one further point on budget. Running costs should always be a big part of any yacht purchase consideration, but this goes to a whole new level with superyachts. Factors such as general maintenance, moorings, fuel, and equipment upgrades are then joined by crew salaries and, in the longer term, survey and refit costs.
