If you want a boat for short day-trips or long lazy days on the water, returning back to port at night, this is the place for you. Lots of open deck space but limited shelter.
A yacht that can look after you and your guests for a night or two, with cabins, a toilet and shower compartment, galley and space to relax, day or night. Good seakeeping ability for port-to- port trips.
For longer stays onboard, and longer passages at sea, you need a more capable, better equipped yacht with increased space to the cabins, living areas, galley and storage.
Long days on the water require clear, safe and open decks, storage space, some dry shelter and cooking and toilet facilities. A comfortable and capable hull to tackle offshore waters is also a must.
Highly capable and seaworthy yachts with overnight accommodation for two or more nights away from port. Deep, safe, and practical decks with good stowage and bait wells. Speed and range are key, with a flybridge or tuna tower to increase visibility.
A yacht of significant ability, not just size, able to not only cross oceans but also tackle long passages and all sea-states. Long periods at sea require plenty of space and comfort for the crew or guests. Most of these yachts are larger and may require a Captain.
Exploring the far reaches of the world by yacht is a serious business, requiring highly specialised vessels that must be capable of spending long periods at sea, in all conditions, leaving little or no trace behind.

If you want to see a good selection of yachts for sale there are two main options. Yacht shows, including used boat shows, offer the best and most varied selection, with multiple brands and models available to inspect.
A good yacht dealer will carry new stock boats, sometimes from one specific brand, while other dealers can be multi-franchise. Used boat dealers or brokerages should offer a wide range of yacht sizes and prices.
The laws on taking control of or skippering (driving) your own yacht will change from one country to another, but what is internationally agreed is that anyone doing so should have a basic level of competence.
There are plenty of ownership and seamanship courses that offer everything from basic yacht handling to full Yacht Master qualifications. If you're buying a new yacht from a dealer, or even a used one, you can expect a certain level of support by way of a hand-over, going through a yacht's operations, which might include some basic handling.
It is just as important that your guests or crew are comfortable and informed with onboard life. There are Competent Crew courses available that will familiarise your crew with mooring procedures and general yacht operations.
Using the boat dealers lender is convenient, but it's best to shop around at specialist lenders and banks ahead of time so you'll know whose rate is best when you're ready to buy. Depending upon the value you wish to borrow this research may take some time but can be well worth the time.
There are numerous ways to experience yachting life outside of outright ownership. Some main dealerships, tied to specific yacht brands, offer lease deals, often with limited access or use. Unlike car leasing, these deals will be highly specific, with only certain yachts available.
You can also join shared ownership schemes that offer a set number of weeks access per year. These shared schemes have the added advantage of reducing running and maintenance costs too.
