MTU’s Series 4000 has a range of models with 8, 12, 16 and 20 cylinders in a V configuration, rated from 1,000hp to 5,766 hp. Due to this versatility in production and the engine’s compact dimensions, you’ll find the series 4000 in all manner of applications; for example, it’s the favoured MTU range for use on diesel-electric submarines.
The engines in the Series 4000 have 32-litre, 52-litre, 69-litre and 86-litre designs, all employ a common-rail fuel injection system that allows the Series 4000 to vary the timing, volume and pressure of the fuel entering the cylinder, while four valves per cylinder also assist in giving low fuel consumption, reduced soot at low engine speeds and low emissions – conforming to Tier II of both IMO and EPA regulations.
The range features sequential turbocharging, providing high engine torque at low speed for improved acceleration.
