MTU

Since being founded in Germany in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl Maybach, MTU Friedrichshafen (MTU) has enjoyed a colorful history. The manufacturing company, originally known as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau (Aircraft Engine Manufacturing Corp), became Maybach-Motorenbau (Maybach Engine Manufacturing Corp) shortly afterward and initially produced diesel and petrol engines for airships and railcars.

Between 1921 and 1940 the company crafted a range of iconic vehicles, simultaneously manufacturing heavy-duty diesel engines for marine and rail applications. In the 1960s the company was renamed (yet again) to MTU Friedrichshafen — MTU deriving from Motoren- und Turbinen-Union, meaning Motor (Engine) and Turbine Union.

MTU remained a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler until 2006 when it was sold and became part of the Tognum Corporation. Eventually, in 2011, Rolls-Royce Holdings and Daimler AG acquired Tognum, and in 2014, Tognum was renamed Rolls-Royce Power Systems, having become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Holdings.
