Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 12.1m beam and a 3.6m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 1,836 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.
The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards.
Exterior Design
Stories about Ilona emphasize the engineering feat of creating a helicopter hangar within the aft deck. Naval architects faced the challenge of integrating tender bays and the hangar without compromising interior space, especially after adding an additional 10 meters during the draft stages. However, Ilona, the Amels yacht, offers much more than just an ingenuous hangar.
How the imposing communications dome includes an open-air observation area beneath it; how the owner suite was designed as an almost stand-alone deck, for when the owner and his wife were onboard without family and friends; how the design team was adamant about avoiding overextending the superstructure forward or aft, preventing the yacht from resembling an apartment block; how each successive deck subtly curves inwards, contributing to the yacht's stunning appearance, and why the design team glazed a section of the bulwark to create a visual connection from the bathing platform to the deck. The design challenges presented within the build were extraordinary and met with ingenuity for a seasoned yacht owner.
During its 2012 refit Ilona underwent a significant transformation, including a change from the utilitarian Twin Squirrel helicopter to the luxurious AgustaWestland GrandNew. The hangar was repurposed into a sizable pool on the aft deck, and the helipad relocated to an aft extension on the top deck. The new aircraft landed well above the waterline and then smoothly rolled forward into sheltered storage behind the mast.
The extended bridge deck not only accommodates the new helicopter but also provides additional space for a barbecue and alfresco dining area.
The 10-meter-long pool, crafted from duplex stainless steel, features a movable floor that can be adjusted for safe children's swimming or a maximum depth of 1.3 meters for adults to enjoy. When not in use, the original hangar sections neatly cover the pool, creating a large, solid deck space.
Twin staircases from the new pool area lead down to the beach club. The launching of tenders and watercraft still occurs from the extensive side balconies at the waterline.
Interior Design
Redman Whiteley Dixon was the design team through Ilona's exterior and interior spaces and therefore were able to work to a holistic brief.
The design theme emphasizes the use of light against dark, a consistent motif that extends throughout the yacht. Soft furnishings in light neutral tones contrast with dark wood floors and carpentry, introducing occasional bursts of color through carefully selected art pieces.
To enhance the overall ambiance and create distinct zones, a variety of wood finishes were employed. Deep mahogany graces reception areas, soft walnut adorns bedrooms, and ebony features prominently in the salons, adding texture and visual appeal to each space.
Accommodation
Ilona offers accommodation for up to 18 guests in 6 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 28 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.
Performance & Capabilities
Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3516 B HI-T) 2,633hp engines, motor yacht Ilona is capable of reaching a top speed of 16 knots, and comfortably cruises at 15 knots. With her 170,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 3,500 nautical miles at 13 knots.
Amenities
In addition, a sumptuous cinema suite allows for movie nights at sea. The yacht can house plenty of nautical toys and accessories, with a well-appointed tender garage for storing her impressive locker. An elevator makes the yacht fully-accessible, while air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort and underwater lights will turn plenty of heads when the sun goes down. Ilona also features a deck jacuzzi for cooling off.
Special Features
The yacht has four active-fin stabilisers and a battery of 65 underwater lights, but perhaps her most notable feature is her two helipads, one of which boasts capability to land a helicopter weighing up to 3,500kg. Initially built with a fully enclosed hangar, complete with refuelling station and a lift that elevated the aircraft to deck level, her 2012 refit saw this feature removed in favour of 10m x 3m swimming pool.
