Blending 1930s elegance with contemporary luxury, Nero, the award-winning 90.1m (295.6ft) classic yacht from Corsair Yachts was delivered in 2007. As the combined owner, designer, and builder of this magnificent new vessel, Neil Taylor drew inspiration from the yachts Corsair III and Corsair IV. Guided by this vision, Taylor created his designs for the interior and exterior of his new yacht. IMT Marine Consultants Ltd handled the naval architecture.

Design & Construction
Yachts from the 1920s, such as Corsair IV, featured compact superstructures. Balancing historical authenticity with contemporary functionality, the challenge was to align with modern expectations. The ultimate choice was a three-level superstructure above the main deck, reminiscent of Corsair IV but subtly elongated fore and aft. This extension created ample living spaces, complemented by expansive 'promenade decks' reminiscent of liner-style design.
Once this balance between length, height, and deckhouse proportions was agreed upon, the yacht was built around a displacement steel hull and superstructure, Nero features a 12.03m (39.4ft) beam and a 4.42m (14.5ft) draft, and the yacht is built over four decks with an internal volume of 1,413 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Taylor assembled a 30-strong "dream team" of specialist managers and builders to begin construction in late 2004. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in May 2007 for sea trials, Nero was ready for final delivery in October 2007.
Exterior Design
The yacht is instantly recognizable with its elegant midnight-black hull, a striking contrast to its cream superstructure and black-rimmed yellow funnel. The hull is not only aesthetically pleasing but is also superbly strong, featuring an attractive tumblehome, an elegant counter stern, and a knife-like bow topped by a 15-meter bowsprit.
The design embodies a perfect balance between length, height, and deckhouse proportion, an aspect that was closely guarded throughout the build. Nero boasts three levels of superstructure above the main deck, slightly extended fore and aft to create the necessary living spaces alongside wide, liner-style 'promenade decks', reminiscent of the golden age of transatlantic liners.
The number of decks on Nero was a carefully considered decision to preserve the yacht's classic good looks while meeting modern expectations and usage.
To achieve this visually pleasing alignment, the numerous bow-topped windows adorning the yacht's superstructure were required to follow the gracefully curved sheer line. However, the owner rejected the conventional approach of aligning internal floors with this curve. The challenge was overcome by strategically stepping the interior floor levels at key intervals. This meticulous adjustment, coupled with the precise positioning of the window line, ensures a harmonious appearance from both the exterior and interior.
One of the yacht's unique features is the 5.7m (18.7ft) swimming pool on the fore deck, which can be filled with fresh or sea water once the safety tender is launched. Furthermore, Nero's tenders, one a classic designed by the owner, are stowed in bays to port and starboard of the bridge deck, launched using a pair of beam cranes that extend outwards from - and are stowed invisibly within - the deckhead.
Interior Design
Nero's interior design is a successful marriage of traditional exterior styling with modern interior practicality. The guiding principle behind the interior design was to craft intimate spaces, prioritizing coziness over grandiosity. The communal rooms therefore offer a range of cozy spaces rather than overwhelmingly large ones, each tailored to suit all needs.
The main deck is divided into three comfortably sized rooms. The aftmost is an inviting salon furnished with classic English settees and easy chairs. The library, housing a grand staircase, offers a quiet space for guests to read or relax by the gas fire. The formal dining salon, paneled and adorned with fluted pillars, hosts a sizable dining table, expandable to seat 22 guests, with additional corner tables augmenting the capacity to 38. Remarkably, this is just one of seven dining areas on the yacht.
Ascending the grand staircase leads to the upper salon, a comfortable living and casual dining room for eight. Its design includes six windows on either side and a classically styled hatch light that pierces the deckhead, flooding the room with light. A four-meter-wide door connects it with the adjacent aft deck, an awning-shaded area with an open-air dining table, sofas, and a semi-circular seat aft.
Ascending from the dining room, a staircase leads to the boat deck and the entrance of the owner's observation lounge. Here, a central seating area is arranged to face a fireplace, surrounded by 20 windows lining the other three walls. Positioned behind the forward windows is an additional sofa, strategically set at a low height until activated by a button. With a silent rise, it unveils the captivating view to its occupants. Another button seamlessly rotates the entire settee 180 degrees, transforming the space into a cinematic haven, complete with an audio projection screen descending in front of the fireplace.
Nero's 'oval office' opens aft from the observation lounge. Arched bookcases, a leather-topped desk, detailed furniture, and a full state-of-the-art communication suite provide a calm and efficient workplace.
Accommodation
Nero can accommodate up to 12 guests in her four spacious cabins. The cabins include two VIP suites and two twin/double cabins. The two VIP suites are particularly impressive with their ample wardrobe space, twin bathrooms, and a sitting room. The larger of the two can be divided into two ensuite cabins if necessary. The twin/double cabins, while smaller, offer superb bathrooms with both a bath and shower compartment.
The owner’s suite is a private duplex apartment spread over the forward portions of the main and boat decks. The suite includes a vast, full-beam bedroom with doors leading forward into two marble-clad bathrooms, each equipped with a bath, shower compartment, twin basins, and a head compartment. The owner's observation lounge on the boat deck lined with 20 windows on three sides offers a breathtaking view of the sea.
Crew and service areas are set over three decks in the bow of Nero. Accommodating up to 20 crew members, the crew has access to two double cabins, for the captain and the chief engineer), followed by nine double-bunk cabins. The lower deck houses a hotel-quality galley, connected to service pantries on the three decks above through a service lift for efficient operations.
Performance & Capabilities
Elegantly marrying classic design with modern engineering, Nero offers an unprecedented level of performance and mechanical capabilities. The yacht is powered by two Caterpillar 3516 engines, providing the vessel with a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 12.5 knots. This optimizes the balance between speed and fuel efficiency, allowing for smooth and comfortable travel.
With its fuel capacity of 176,000 liters, Nero boasts an impressive range of 4,500 nautical miles when cruising at 12.5 knots. This long-range capability makes the yacht perfect for extended voyages, enabling guests to explore far-flung destinations without the need for frequent refueling stops.
In terms of stability, Nero is equipped with a Naiad 4 fin stabilization system - a feature that enhances the comfort of guests on board by reducing roll motion. This system offers stabilization at anchor, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience even in rougher seas.
The yacht's drive system is equally impressive, with a 147kw Brunvoll hydraulic bow and stern thrusters, both featuring variable pitch propellers. These provide excellent maneuverability, making the yacht easy to handle in a variety of conditions.
The yacht also has a state-of-the-art fire control system by Marioff Hi-Fog, ensuring the safety of all those on board. The control and monitoring systems are managed by Biorg and Molland, providing optimal control over the yacht’s various systems.
Nero also comes equipped with two HEM watermakers, each capable of producing 40,000 liters of fresh water per day, and a Novenco air-conditioning system to ensure comfort in any climate.
For power generation, the yacht relies on two 360kw Caterpillar 3412 generators, one 280kW Caterpillar 3408 generator, and a 134kw Caterpillar 3306 generator. This ensemble ensures a reliable power supply for all onboard systems and amenities, even during long voyages.
In terms of communication and navigation, Nero is equipped with a combination of Thrane & Thrane, Furuno, Iridium, and SeaTel equipment. This provides guests with seamless connectivity, even in the most remote locations, and ensures safe and accurate navigation.
Leisure & Entertainment
The yacht features a well-equipped gym, allowing her guests to keep up their fitness regimes at sea. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort. Nero also features a deck jacuzzi for cooling off.
Nero's tenders, including a 9.5m custom Corsair classic and an 8.5m Aquaflyte custom RIB, are stored in bays port and starboard of the bridge deck. These are launched using a pair of beam cranes that extend outwards from the deckhead, providing seamless accessibility for guests looking to explore beyond the yacht.
