The 76.45m expedition yacht Petrel was delivered to her owners in 2003 by Brattvaag Skipsverft AS.

Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 15m beam and a 7.47m draft. The yacht is built over 7 decks with an internal volume of 3,371 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Exterior Design

Originally built in 2003 as a deepwater offshore inspection vessel, Petrel was converted by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2016 into an expedition yacht for deep-submergence research and archaeology. Serving as the tender to the main yacht Octopus, Petrel retains the robust appearance of its utilitarian roots, featuring a dark hull and white superstructure. With its high sides and dominant amidships section, the yacht is balanced by a helipad on the bow and a spacious crane and operational deck on the stern.

As a predominantly research-focused yacht, there are few portholes to allow natural light into the interior spaces. Guests who join the yacht are fully aware of its operational nature, and amenities like saunas and steam rooms were never high on the list of priorities.

The high bow of the yacht accommodates aircraft landings, with the white superstructure prominently featuring a hexagonal bridge area surrounded by inverted glazing, offering a full 360-degree view. Above this, a three-layered radar and navigational mast section rises high atop the yacht. Moving aft from the central section, the stern is steeply angled and descends via stairways and ladders to reach the expansive aft deck, which is closed off at the stern.

Interior Design

The available photographs of the interior of the explorer yacht Petrel primarily showcase its research-oriented features. These include intricate bridge stations, multi-screen display units, and storage areas for submarines.

Accommodation

The yacht accommodates up to ten guests with a crew of 20 onboard to ensure operational effectiveness and guest service.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by 4 x diesel Mitsubishi (S16R MPTK) 2,298hp engines, motor yacht Petrel is capable of reaching a top speed of 15 knots, and comfortably cruises at 13 knots.
