Groupe Beneteau reports stronger than forecast end to the year

A strong demand for outboard boats saw sales climb by 13.6% for the Group in the motorboat sector in 2019-20.

In its 2019-20 revenues report, Groupe Beneteau has recorded a better end to the year than forecast thanks to strong demand for outboard boats.

Despite the cancellation of almost all the autumn and winter boat shows globally, sales climbed by 13.6% for the Group in the motorboat sector, driven primarily by an interest in dayboating and outboard boats. Boat sales in Europe and North America were also up by 10.2% and 6% respectively, with other areas around the world remaining stable.

Groupe Beneteau put the strong sales figures down to adapting and offering new formats to buyers who want to view boats. It has organized a number of local private events and exclusive days along with virtual shows and other digital initiatives to make the process easier during the Coronavirus pandemic.

This is a common trend with many other brands and dealer networks around the world also reporting good sales figures, indicating the yachting industry has continued to adapt and flourish.

  • Sanlorenzo exceeded its 2019 deliveries by October in 2020.
  • Custom Line reported that 2020 was a record year, with 18 yachts launched.
  • 2020 was Nordhavn’s busiest and most successful year ever in brokerage sales.
  • Taiwanese shipyards Ocean Alexander and Horizon both recorded strong years with a growing number of boats in build.

In fact the Asian market in general has shown particular resilience with multiple Asian shipyards witnessing an upturn in sales.

Perhaps the most promising indicator that 2021 could follow in the footsteps of 2020 was shown in reports that December 2020 was the second strongest single month for brokerage sales since 2009, with 57 sales recorded. In fact, the second half of 2020 was the best six months for brokerage sales since 2009.

With a rollout globally in Coronavirus vaccines and consequentially the easing of travel restrictions it is hoped the strong sales figures will continue throughout this year.
