Princess X80 Review (2022 Edition)

With five cabins, two salons, and a cruising speed of 30 knots, is the Princess X80 one of the most formidable and most comprehensive 25m yachts ever made?

Princess ripped up its rulebook with the X95, yet the new Princess X80 presents an even greater feat, aiming for the same two-deck, five-cabin layout in a vessel 15 feet shorter. Not content with this challenge alone, the British builder also aspired to make this 25-meter yacht the most voluminous while achieving a top speed of 30 knots. If successful, it will set an impressive standard.

Design & Build

Tasked with delivering the two-deck concept of the X Class within a 25-meter hull, the designers of the X80 faced a significant challenge. Furthermore, the yacht needed to reach speeds of 30 knots while providing ample interior customisation options for buyers.

Labelling the X80 as merely a scaled-down version of the 95 would be a gross oversimplification, yet it's arguably the highest praise one could give to both this yacht and its design team.

X Marks the Spot

While the two-deck design may appear more prominent on a smaller yacht, once aboard, few will take notice. Despite being approximately 5m (15ft) shorter than the X95, the X80 still boasts up to five cabins, including a main deck owner’s stateroom and an elevated salon. These key areas exhibit a striking resemblance to those of the X95, featuring nearly identical layouts and finishes. The X80 achieves this feat with less space to maneuver, making it even more impressive.

Similar to the 95, the X80 also maintains a relatively narrow 6.6m (21ft) beam, which could potentially impact volume. However, the proportions are nearly flawless, with no area onboard feeling cramped or compromised. Even the side decks, often sacrificed for interior volume, are generously wide.

Space Rocket

While many in the SUV and next-generation yacht market prioritize 20-knot performance, Princess has taken a different route with the X80, offering impressive speed capabilities. With a top speed of 30 knots powered by twin 1,900hp 16V MAN engines, this super-cruiser stands out in its class. While stabilizers will be necessary for a stable low-speed ride given the air draught, credit is due to naval architect Olesinski for engineering a hull that achieves such remarkable speed for a yacht of this size.

Debates may arise regarding whether Princess could have prioritized efficiency over speed, but with over 20 yachts already sold, it's evident that the British builder has a firm grasp on what buyers desire.

Interior Accommodation

Starting with the interior, the X80 boasts numerous standout features, but two in particular shine brightly. Firstly, the elevated salon mirrors the style and elegance of the X95, albeit in slightly smaller dimensions, which somehow enhances its appeal. Skylights and expansive glass panels create a tranquil and visually stunning lounge area, perfect for relaxation and enjoyment.

On the main deck, Princess has diligently maintained the X Class concept of a forward stateroom or dining area. While the trend among X95 buyers leans towards the stateroom, the main deck owner’s cabin on the X80 is undeniably impressive. Bright and spacious, it features extensive glass sections on three sides and a large sliding side deck door, providing direct access to the foredeck lounge — a feature even the X95 lacks.

Although not full width, the cabin boasts an excellent ensuite to starboard, ensuring ample space and comfort. Sliding ensuite doors enhance the cabin's openness, allowing guests to fully appreciate the hull windows within. Moreover, separate toilet and shower compartments ensure privacy and convenience.

Social Choice

While the main deck owner’s cabin is undoubtedly appealing, the option to have a forward dining area presents an intriguing choice. Connected to the main salon via a spacious companionway, this area offers a unique dining experience. Though it lacks the open, country kitchen found on the X95, it compensates with glass on three sides, ensuring an incredible ambiance. For those who value onboard dining, especially with four cabins below decks, this layout may be particularly enticing.

A standout feature of the X80 is its standard galley, which ranks among our favorites. Princess has consistently delivered innovative and social galley designs, and the X80 is no exception. In open mode, a bar and stools integrate the galley with the salon, creating a focal point in the inviting lounge area. Alternatively, the galley can be closed off, leaving the bar area free for crew use. Inside, ample storage, freezer drawers, and a large fridge cater to all culinary needs. With a door leading to the starboard deck and plenty of workspace, the galley offers both functionality and style.

For those opting for the main deck Owner’s cabin, the deck salon lounge serves as the primary interior dining area, complemented by numerous outdoor dining options.

Triple Suites

Ascending a skeletal staircase, guests are led to the upper lounge, while another staircase descends to the cleverly designed four-cabin layout below decks. The full-beam VIP suite amidship exudes luxury, resembling an owner’s stateroom with its expansive hull windows offering stunning views. Each section of glass is complemented by a lounge and dressing area, while a walk-in closet and spacious ensuite complete the indulgent space.

The forward VIP suite lives up to its name, boasting two closets and an ensuite accessible via a private entranceway. Nestled between these suites lies a well-appointed ensuite twin cabin, showcasing the yacht's excellent proportion work and thoughtful design.

It’s worth noting that with the main deck cabin option, the X80 offers three proper staterooms and a total of five ensuite cabins, making it an exceptional choice for chartering purposes.

Helm Station

Positioned before a wide single windscreen, the bridge exudes a distinctly ship-like ambiance, featuring a central helm seat and guest seating reminiscent of the X95. Mirroring its larger counterpart, the X80’s console is equipped with three MFDs as standard, with room for two additional screens. A convenient chart area and lamp are neatly tucked to starboard. Offering excellent visibility, the forward screen is complemented by two elongated side windows, affording the captain a clear view over the bows.

During day cruising, the helm area can be left open to the upper lounge for a more social atmosphere. However, for longer or night passages, it can be enclosed with sliding doors, establishing a dedicated and focused center of operations.

Deck Lifestyle

The upper deck on the X80 is nearly a full walkaround, offering access to the foredeck through the bridge area. Adjacent to the bridge superstructure, extensive storage lockers provide ample space for gear, including cushions for the social seating arrangement on the spacious aft deck.

The aft area offers various layout options, from wet bars to a 10-person dining table and lounge space, allowing owners to customize according to their preferences. An awning extending from the overhang provides ample shade as desired.

On the upper forward deck, two spacious sun pads are positioned for relaxation, with tall stainless steel railings offering a balcony-like view over the bows, ideal for portside enjoyment.

Masterly Main Deck

The main deck boasts spacious and secure decks, providing a comfortable environment for both crew and guests. At the bow, a versatile lounge area offers the option to install a Jacuzzi for added enjoyment. If you choose the main deck owner’s cabin, the foredeck becomes your private sanctuary, perfect for relaxation in port or at anchor.

Moving aft, the main deck features a conventional U-shaped dining area and wet bar. While there's space for additional amenities like a bar or customized features, leaving the deck uncluttered allows for seamless integration between the interior and exterior spaces, with cockpit doors opening up completely.

Accessed from the swim platform via a transom door, the crew quarters offer practical accommodations. While lacking a mini lounge or the transformer platform found on the X95, the X80 includes a hydraulic swim platform as standard, facilitating tender launch and recovery.

Value For Money

Princess spares no expense when it comes to outfitting its large yachts. Each vessel comes equipped with a comprehensive array of features that ensure a comfortable and capable experience on the water. From full teak decks to generators, navigational equipment, and a well-appointed galley, every detail is carefully considered to meet the highest standards of luxury and functionality. Additionally, there are plenty of options available for customization to suit the preferences of each individual owner.

Princess X80

Positioned at the upper echelon of the 25m market, the X95 commands a premium price tag – and rightfully so. With its blend of style, expansive living spaces, and top-notch specifications, it delivers exceptional value for discerning buyers seeking the pinnacle of luxury yacht ownership.

Our Verdict

While the X80 offers much more than just its upper deck, it's this feature that truly distinguishes it from nearly every other 25m yacht. With its exquisite elevated salon, bridge, and aft terrace, along with a stunning main deck Owner’s stateroom that can be part of a versatile four or five-suite layout, the X80 stands out as the epitome of luxurious accommodation in its class.

Rivals to Consider

The X80 is a great package, and it needs to be with some exceptional rivals out there offering the same level of exterior flair and interior luxury.

The award-winning Sirena 88 doesn’t have an enclosed upper salon, with a luxurious flybridge instead but, on all other counts, it takes the fight to the Princess with its separate bridge, main deck stateroom and four guest cabins wrapped in an enthralling German Frers exterior design.

The Sanlorenzo SX76 is another thing of beauty, carrying its height very well to deliver an upper deck that feels somewhere between a flybridge and a lounge. The versatile four-cabin interior design includes an open main deck with lots of layout options.

If explorer-style is your thing, the Numarine 26XP has masses of volume and a 3500nm range, while the Horizon FD80 and FD75 deliver that same muscular SUV prowess and cruising ability.

All of these yachts bring bags of personality to a market that previously only really fed on flybridge designs. And, if being different matters, the four-cabin Arcadia Sherpa 80 XL lays down a uniquely fun but wonderfully useable package of design. Its massive aft deck is a place to spend weeks rather days, with a spectacular glass salon forward. The upper deck is sensational in every sense, with a bridge that can be open to the wind and spray.
