Apreamare Boats History & Heritage

Apreamare has a heritage few can match in the industry. Its roots can be traced back to 1849 when Giovanni Aprea started to make handbuilt rowing and sailing boats used for fishing in Sorrento.

These vessels were based on the shape and the form of the traditional “Gozzo Sorrentino”, a small boat initially devoted to fishing, a particularly flourishing activity in the Gulf of Naples at the time.

This remained the company’s main business as ownership was passed down by Giovanni to his son Cataldo, then by Cataldo to his eldest son Giovanni. By now the yard was emerging from the effects of the Second World War and for the first time refining its product offerings.

Car engines began to be fitted to the boats and Apreamare began to move its focus away from fishing boats producing the first ‘Gozzi’, a round hulled pleasure boat that would influence many of the vessels that would follow over the next few decades.

The next generation of Apreamare boats was ushered in by Cataldo Aprea, who joined the family boatyard in 1973. Determined to keep the spirit of the ‘Gozzi’ boat going, Cataldo set about reinventing it and produced a series of drawings of a new hull that eventually paved the way for the yard’s Gozzo range.

In 2001 Apreamare was bought by the Ferretti Group and remained under its wing for almost a decade before in 2010, the Aprea and Pollio families, the founders of the historical brand bought the yard back into family ownership, in which it has remained ever since.

The yard is based not far from where it was founded all those years ago, operating from a headquarters in Torre Annunziata, on the Gulf of Naples.
