Well known and highly regarded in the powerboat racing fraternity, Yanmar’s long-running 6LY series is now in its fourth generation with the 400hp-440hp 6LY400/440 range of engines.
The classic 5.8-litre, six-cylinder engine block remains the same but some major engineering advances have been implemented and electronic engine management functionality has been added. The fuel induction and aspiration systems have been completely re-engineered; single injectors are replaced with a high-pressure common rail fuel system and there’s a new 24-valve cylinder head with a redesigned inlet and exhaust manifold to improve engine breathing.
Engine management and monitoring functions are separated, with two CAN bus networks operating in parallel. 6LY400 engines are compact units that share the same footprint as previous 6LY models (and various similar engines), which makes them quite versatile as a retrofit/repowering option. In addition to the 400/440 series, older 6LY designs such as the 2M-WDT (330-352hp), 2A-UTP (370hp) and 2M-WST (376hp) are still available.
