Delivered in 1930, Atlantide is a 37.28m classic yacht built by Philip & Sons. Her interior design and exterior styling comes from the drawing boards of Ken Freivokh, while BMT Nigel Gee and Associates is responsible for her naval architecture.

Design & Construction

Designed around a full displacement steel hull and an aluminium / teak superstructure she features a 5.46m beam and a 2.71m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 137 GT (Gross Tonnes).

The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards.

Originally designed by Alfred Mylne, she was built in 1930 by Philip and Son at Dartmouth. Her launch marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that saw her through war, luxury, and restoration.

How did they do it?

Atlantide’s story began with Sir William Burton, a distinguished yachtsman who commissioned her to follow his 12-metre yachts during regattas. During WWII, she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and participated in the Dunkirk evacuation. Post-war, she changed hands several times, each owner adding a layer to her rich history.

In 1998, Thomas Perkins acquired Atlantide and undertook an exhaustive restoration. The hull was reconstructed in Malta, while the interior & superstructure were crafted in England. The rebuild focused on preserving her classic elegance while adding contemporary touches. Her deck structures were designed to accommodate a large aft deck, a spacious upper deck, and a raised foredeck, all key to her role as a tender.

Key Dates

31 May 1940: Set out for Dunkirk under intense enemy fire.
1 June 1940: Delivered 35 troops safely at Sheerness.
August 1999: Relaunched after a total rebuild.
October 2020: Bought by Jim Clark to act as a tender to 42m (138ft) sail yacht HANUMAN.

Challenges & Triumphs

The 1999 refit faced many challenges, particularly with the hull and structural integrity. The rivets holding her together had wasted away, and parts of the bow barely held on by paint. Despite these hurdles, the team, led by Ken Freivokh Design & Nigel Gee & Associates, took on the painstaking task of restoring Atlantide. The hull reconstruction took place at the Manoel Island Yacht Yard in Malta, while Camper & Nicholsons in Gosport handled the new superstructure & interior.

From her varnished bowsprit to her purposeful masts, every bit of Atlantide was restored. The teak rail emphasized her sublime sheer, while her deck structures provided uninterrupted spaces for crew gatherings & guest enjoyment.

Each phase of her life, from wartime service to luxury tender, has been carefully preserved, making her a pure investment in maritime heritage.
