Design & Construction
Designed around a full displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 15m beam and a 7.23m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 2,864 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in early 2013 with the keel laid under the project name 'Solar'. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in September 2016 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in March 2018.
Exterior Design
Black Pearl was conceived as a sailing yacht first and foremost, and every part of the exterior reflects that starting point. At 106m (347.8ft) in length with a 15m (49.2ft) beam and 7.23m (23.7ft) draft, she was the largest sailing yacht in the world at the time of her delivery in 2018 and remains the largest yacht built around the DynaRig sailing system.
The yacht is built on a full-displacement steel hull with an aluminium superstructure, a structure chosen to balance strength with reduced top weight. The hull was constructed in Rotterdam over a period of roughly fourteen months using plate steel as thin as 8mm (0.3in), while more than 1,300 tonnes of outfitting is balanced by a 300-tonne ballast system. Overall internal volume reaches around 2,700GT, spread across three decks.
Her profile is immediately recognisable. Hull and superstructure are finished entirely in black, which emphasises the long sheer line and continuous sweep of the design. The bow has a fine entry with a pronounced flare, so it slices through the water with minimal resistance while lifting over waves. This form helps keep the foredeck dry and reduces drag when sailing.
Above the hull rise three 70m (229.7ft) free-standing carbon fibre masts carrying a total sail area of about 2,900sqm (31,215sqft). These are part of the DynaRig system, where curved yards support square sails that furl into the masts. The entire sail plan can deploy in roughly six minutes, which allows the yacht to move quickly from motoring to full sail.
Deck space is arranged across three levels and combines sailing operations with guest areas. The sundeck functions as a social and observation space with bars, seating and flexible table arrangements that shift between dining and lounge use. The upper deck aft holds exterior dining and a jacuzzi for eight guests, while the main deck aft includes a 4m (13ft) swimming pool fitted with a counter-current flow jet. The foredeck is unusually open for a yacht of this scale and is often used as a relaxation or activity space.
Interior Design
The interior was developed by Valentina Zannier at Nuvolari-Lenard, with additional design input from Gerard Villate, and it takes a markedly different route from the exterior. Outside, Black Pearl is technical and stark. Inside, the styling leans into Louis XVI-inspired detail, with gilded accents, neoclassical motifs, carved panelling, polished marble and antique-style furniture.
Across the three interior decks, the rooms are large, bright and carefully proportioned. Soft lighting and reflective finishes help warm the spaces, while big windows bring in natural light and maintain a close link with the sea. The main saloon is the largest room on board, with around 2.5m (8.2ft) of headroom, large windows to port and starboard, multiple seating areas, a bar and a formal dining setup nearby. The room also carries a piano, chandeliers and decorative art, so the atmosphere is more theatrical than stripped-back.
Sightlines play an important role in the interior planning. From the forward office and library area, the view can run through almost 100m (328.1ft) of the yacht toward the stern platform, and that visual length gives the interior a sense of scale that few yachts can match. Forward of the main saloon, the office, library or poker room also has a skylight that frames the foremast overhead, so the sailing rig stays present even inside.
The dining room continues the indoor-outdoor theme. Shell doors open to port and starboard, creating private terraces off the dining space, and that allows the room to extend outward before or after dinner. There is also an indoor cinema lounge, which complements the much larger exterior cinema arrangement on deck.
One of the most versatile spaces is the lower-deck wellness and beach club area, often referred to as the night lounge. Shell doors on both sides open the room to the sea, and sliding partitions allow it to split into separate zones or remain as one large space. Within that area are a gym, massage room, juice bar, hammam, sauna, shower, beauty salon and a hospital room. The same space also supports tender boarding and links directly with the aft deck and swim platform, so it works as a wellness centre, sea-level lounge and operational zone at once.
The bridge and sailing station are also part of the interior story because the yacht’s technical systems are so tightly integrated into daily use. Touchscreen interfaces control mast rotation, sail deployment and system monitoring, and that automation reduces the manpower needed to manage the rig. It also reflects a broader design philosophy across the yacht, where old-world decorative style sits alongside highly advanced sailing and energy systems.
Environmental efficiency is built into the interior as well. Advanced HVAC and air purification systems manage comfort while limiting energy use. Waste heat from the propulsion system is reused to warm interior spaces and water, and the glazing is heavily insulated for better thermal performance. So while the decorative language is traditional, the systems behind it are focused on efficiency and reduced consumption.
Accommodation
Black Pearl offers accommodation for ten guests, extendable to 14. The cabin layout includes a spacious full-beam stateroom with a lounge leading to an opening balcony. Two VIP cabins feature sliding doors to a lounge area, equipped with sofa beds for increased guest capacity, along with an additional en-suite bathroom. The onboard accommodation is completed by a further double cabin and a twin cabin. With 27 crew onboard, Black Pearl ensures efficient operational activity and an exceptional guest experience.
Performance & Capabilities
Black Pearl’s sailing system is centred around a revolutionary DynaRig setup with three free-standing carbon masts, each rising to 70m (230ft). These advanced rigs support a total of 2,900 square metres of sail, divided across curved yard arms into 15 low-load panels per mast. All sails can be deployed in under seven minutes, and the entire rig is fully automated, enabling one person to trim or rotate the masts via touchscreen controls at the bridge.
This level of precision and responsiveness enables the yacht to sail efficiently even in light conditions. Under sail alone, Black Pearl has recorded speeds of 24.5 knots, with projected hull speeds approaching 30 knots. The ability to rotate the masts, rather than relying solely on sheet trim, allows for accurate tuning and balance across the full sail plan. Each mast also flexes at the top under load, further contributing to control and efficiency.
A key feature of Black Pearl’s design is her capacity to regenerate power while underway. The variable-pitch propellers can be feathered to reduce drag or adjusted to act as turbines, producing electricity to charge the yacht’s battery banks while sailing. This power supports all hotel loads, allowing for long stretches of “Silent Ship” operation without engine use. Air handling systems, lighting, and appliances can all be sustained through energy harvested under sail.
Additional energy comes from integrated solar panels embedded into the spars, yards, and superstructure. Plans for lightweight, flexible solar panels mounted directly on the sails are in progress, potentially delivering around 160 to 170 kilowatt-hours per day across 1,400 square metres of surface area.
The entire power system is governed by a centralised management interface that continuously optimises generation and load distribution. Propeller pitch can be adjusted on demand, switching from propulsion to regeneration as needed, and waste heat from the engines is recaptured to warm the yacht’s interior and water systems.
Thanks to these combined technologies, Black Pearl is capable of transatlantic passages with no fossil fuel consumption. Her sailing performance, power regeneration, and low-drag systems work in harmony to deliver speed, range, and sustainability on a scale rarely seen in the sailing world.
Leisure & Entertainment
One of the most distinctive entertainment features sits high on the mizzen mast. Here a 9m x 14m (29.5ft x 45.9ft) projection screen forms the centrepiece of the yacht’s outdoor cinema, which is among the largest ever installed on a private vessel, all in addition to an internal cinema area. A jacuzzi on the upper deck comfortably accommodates eight guests and a 4m (13ft) swimming pool on the main deck features a flow jet. In terms of watersports, Black Pearl provides all options for wakeboarding, kayaking, water skiing, jet ski adventures, and a flite board in addition to snorkeling equipment and sea bobs.
Wellness
Black Pearl provides a sauna, Hammam and a massage table for guest wellness and relaxation.
Tenders
Black Pearl carries three tenders: a 10.40m (34ft) Pascoe Limo tender, a 9.8m (32ft) Pascoe Beachlander tender, and a 5.65m (18.5ft) Williams open tender
