Italy is delivering some exceptional 40m moments, perfectly illustrated by these two serious semi-custom superyachts. The Benetti Oasis 40 and Custom Line Navetta 42 are both tri-deck designs of very similar dimensions and loaded with style, space and a very useful 4000nm of range at displacement speeds.

On paper delivering the same level of interior space and design, these two yachts display their three decks and five cabins quite differently. Ultimately, it’s hard to look beyond Benetti’s excellent and awe-inspiring Oasis stern design, but we shall try.

Performance

As semi-displacement designs, these two Italian yachts are more focused on the displacement than the semi, with smooth, long-distance cruising. The headline figures are a top speed of 16 knots and 4000nm at 12knots for the Benetti and 18knots and 3700nm at 10knots for the Custom Line. The Benetti has the far larger fuel tanks at 45,000lt (9,899gal) to 37,000lt (8,139gal) suggesting the difference in range is more to do with fuel capacity than a particular design trait.

So far, so straightforward, but while the Benetti offers just the one, apparently very adequate, engine installation, with a pair of V12 MAN 1400hp engines, the Navetta offers no less than six options. Buyers can choose from twin 1450hp, 1700hp, 1800hp MTUs, or 1400hp, 1600hp and 1800hp Caterpillars. Range and cruising speed will be less affected by your choice than top speed, so it really is a matter of which engine manufacturer you prefer.

The Benetti’s ability to cruise for long distances at a higher speed is a definite advantage, knocking serious time off a passage.

Interior

Nowhere is the ‘same but different’ design theory felt more keenly between these two yachts than when you enter the interiors. Both have a main and upper salon with adjoining decks. The Navetta’s extra length perhaps not feeling as evident as the Benetti’s slightly wider beam. What is very much obvious are the different styles at play, the Benetti main salon is full of open spaces and curves, including two wonderful arcs of seating that merges with similarly circular doors to the aft deck. The Custom Line is more typically linear with rows of cabinetry and facing sofas. Both salons are flanked by full-height glass with side deck doors, the Custom Line having a fold-down balcony off the dining area. On the upper deck, the Benetti width is again felt, with a large skylounge with a bar, dining area and lounge.

Accommodation

The design of Benetti creates a true superyacht stateroom for the Owner, the cabin and lounge enjoying separate zones, leading forward to a full-width dressing room and en suite beyond, it is a design that will make 60m yacht Owners envious.

The Navetta is more traditional in its layout with the cabin and lounge sharing what is an excellent suite and the en suite forward.

An interesting difference in design, the Navetta uses the entranceway to its Owner’s cabin for storage and a study area, whereas the Benetti closes off the outboard section, creating a gym, although it could be used as a study, perhaps?

Both yachts then lay on four, customisable guest cabins below decks, all ensuite and of a very good size with two clear VIPs.

As crew-operated yachts, the Benetti makes room for eight crew berths in four cabins, a mess and galley, the Custom line has six berths along with a mess and galley. Both yachts have proper captains cabins on the upper deck, aft of the helm.

Helm Station

There are a few moments where the Benetti Oasis 40 not only transcends this Head-to-Head but also every other 40m on the market. The helm is one of those moments. Walking into the Oasis 40’s helm station is like entering yachting future. A central throne-like smart seat is set before floor-to-ceiling glass and a wraparound control pod with two screens at eye level and three above. Visibility is off the scale, only matched by the thrill of the design. Kirk is perhaps the only other Captain to have enjoyed such a fantastic helm.

Simple unobtrusive deck space is then lavishly laid on around the helm, allowing it to enjoy the moment, with big side doors leading on deck and guest and crew seating set respectfully to one side.

The Navetta does a good job of reminding us what a good traditional helm looks like. Its central helm station enjoying five large screens and there is guest seating too.

Deck Areas

As tri-deck yachts, both the Benetti and Custom Line are capped by an excellent sun deck, the Oasis 40 packing n the luxury with a massive bar and galley on either side of a central dining table sheltered by a hardtop. Lounging is found aft, open to the sun. The Navetta’s sun deck is massive but keeps things more simple, still with a dining area, bar and galley but with more open deck to enjoy.

Down a level, we come to the private upper decks that run off the skylounges. The Navetta again delivers lots of space, with a sheltered dining area and open lounge further aft. The Oasis has space for a lounge, partly covered by an awning, leaving on deck dining to be more than adequately handled by the main and sun decks.

Both yachts also create excellent foredeck lounges, proper separate decks to enjoy, particularly when in port.

Beach Club

The Oasis name relates to the design around the stern of the 40 and its smaller sibling the 34, creating a multi-tiered deck that allows guests to luxuriate as close to the water as they wish. Effectively a complete rethink of main deck design, the Oasis turns everything through 180 degrees, so the seating is facing aft, overlooking a pool and opening up the deck with two hydraulic flanks that fold down to create extra width and deck to enjoy at rest, closing things up when underway. Not, perhaps, strictly a beach club the result is never-the-less an aft deck terrace that you might only see on 70m yachts.

As with every other 40m yacht, the Navetta 42 cannot complete here, but it does offer guests a hydraulic terrace and useful snug, with enough space for loungers.

Both yachts have the tender garage forward, athwartships, the Benetti pushing it further along, in front of the engine bay, which is how they have managed to steal so much low-level deck space aft.

Compare Layouts

The overall layouts are very similar but the way the Benetti uses its space in key areas makes these yachts feel very different. The big moment is the main deck aft, where clever design changes a rarely used part of a yacht into the main attraction. But another key layout area is the crew quarters, where Benetti has worked in eight berths in four cabins.
