The Fairline Squadron 50 is a fast cruising flybridge yacht, intended for Owner operation for up to six guests across a flexible two or three cabin layout. With a top speed of 32knots, cruising at around 25knots, the Squadron 50 runs on pod drives with a modified Vee planing hull. The Absolute 50 Fly offers a very similar package to the Fairline, with a three-cabin layout and fast-cruising pod drive performance. The main difference between these two yachts is found with the interior layouts. The Absolute offers a set galley-aft three-cabin layout that includes a forward VIP, whilst the Fairline opts for flexibility. These two yachts measure up very closely. The Fairline is longer at 15.6m, compared to the Absolure’s 15.2m. But that slight advantage is redressed by the Absolute’s wider beam, which, although only 100mm more, will be felt inside. The more interesting figure is displacement, with the Absolute significantly heavier. The two constructors offer different measurements for weight but we approximate the loaded weights as being 16,000kg (35,275lbs) for the Fairline but over 22,000kg (48,500lbs) of the Absolute. This points to a lighter build for the more slender Fairline and backs up the Absolute’s apparent size and volume.

Performance

Both of these yachts run on a modified Vee planing hull with Volvo Penta IPS pod drives, delivering fast cruising performance and top speeds of around 30 knots. The Fairline and Absolute both use the D6 engine as standard, but the Fairline pushes on to the bigger D11, backing up its performance reputation. As serious cruising yachts, both will comfortably run at 20knot-25knots with the heavier Absolute having the bigger fuel capacity.

Interior

The Fairline’s flexible interior design always includes a bright main salon with a smaller elevated lounge forward. The Absolute enjoys the big yacht feature of facing seating in its salon. Both main salons are flanked by glass, the Absolute offering huge sections for a very bright feel.

Accommodation

The Fairline and Absolute offer full beam Owners’ cabins with private entranceways, en-suite and hull side glass. The Absolute makes room for sofa, while the Fairline opts for cabinetry to both sides. Where the Italian yacht impresses more is with its bright forward VIP, which is the equal of many owner’s cabins.

Helm Station

As flybridge yachts, you have two separate helm stations, one in the salon the other up top. Both yachts deliver twin helm seats at each station and excellent visibility. At the lower helm, the Fairline’s has a real luxury car feel, while the Absolute offers the hugely useful advantage of a side deck door.

Deck Areas

The Fairline keeps it simple on the main deck, with an aft cockpit that leads neatly and safely forward along good side decks. The Absolute offers the same layout but works harder on luxury with its aft cockpit seating adding a small sunpad and the foredeck also enjoying another seating area.

Flybridge

These yachts are hard to separate up top. The Absolute has stairs leading up, the Fairline a very nice stainless steel and teak ladder. They both deliver a very social layout with a central wet bar and seating and lounging space fore and aft. The finish and space on these flybridges is equally good with the option of a hardtop adding a more grown up feel.

Compare Layouts

The most obvious difference between these two yachts is found with the interior layout. There are similarities, as with the general deck design, galley aft position and full beam Owner’s cabin, but where the Absolute offers a fixed three-cabin layout the Fairline offers lots of options. You can have three cabins, or a liveaboard-focused two-cabin design with an optional lower salon and utility area. The galley can be up or down too.
