The Horizon FD87 is a SUV-style yacht offering a very spacious five-cabin layout, including a main deck Owner’s cabin. Designed for serious cruising under crew operation, the FD range refers to fast-displacement, with a hull design delivering good stability and range at slower, efficient speeds but also pushing on to 20 knots with the largest engine option. The Ocean Alexander 28R offers a very similar SUV design and layout, with a main deck Owner’s cabin, crew operation and similarly flexible performance from a semi-displacement hull. The R stands for revolution, for what is an undeniably new direction for this usually conservative Far-Eastern builder.

Performance

Designed for serious cruising, the Horizon FD87 offers two engine options, running on conventional shaftdrives, delivering two different modes of performance. A testament to the flexibility of a semi or fast displacement hull, the smaller engines will hit around 15knots but are more geared towards efficient displacement cruising. The bigger engines will push on to 20knots, offering faster cruising speeds while still retaining displacement efficiencies. The Ocean Alexander 28R's hull is also semi-displacement running on shaftdrives, but boosts the horsepower with twin 2,300 engines. Speeds in excess of 20 knots should be expected, with good, efficient cruising from 8knots-15knots.

Interior

These yachts reflect one of the key benefits of the SUV design, the unapologetically tall superstructures delivering big bright deck salon flanked by glass. Both salons are on one level with forward dining areas and open onto the decks with full-height aft and side doors.

Accommodation

The main deck Owner’s stateroom is a true large yacht feature, creating a separate entrance for greater privacy and an elevated position that delivers great views out. Both of these yachts deliver excellent cabins with lots of space, large windows and forward ensuites.

Helm Station

These SUVs offer a pilothouse design with a single raised interior helm position. Both feel very professional with a broad helm console and multiple seating options. These raised positions not only feel ship-like but also afford excellent forward visibility and would make excellent and comfortable positions for longer passages.

Deck Areas

The aft decks on both yachts are broad and spacious, with wide, covered side decks that lead up to raised foredecks. The Horizon’s forward lounge is deep and feels incredibly sheltered, almost hidden within the yacht’s side, with a clean, simple design delivering lots of seating. The Ocean Alexander’s forward lounge is smaller but feels more luxurious with seating and loungers.

Flybridge

The pilothouse design mixes a raised upper lounge with an open aft deck, creating privacy and a long sweep of social space that moves seamlessly from inside to out. Both yachts work to a very similar design, the Horizon FD87 perhaps winning on space while the Ocean Alexander 28R edges it on luxury finish. That being said, with both builders offering lots of flexibility on finish and layout, the end result is very much down to the Owner’s cruising style.

Beach Club

A true beach club should be a waterside lounge and terrace. Usually at the stern, a beach club might open on one, two or three sides of the yacht. It should be practical, able to withstand plenty of use, watersports and saltwater, but also luxurious, creating a spectacular retreat day or night.

Compare Layouts

These are two incredibly similar SUV layouts with each builder also offering plenty of flexibility and customization. Both yachts feature main deck Owner’s cabins running off the salon with a pilothouse above, the helm position leading to a raised lounge and upper deck. The Ocean Alexander is also available as the 28R Open with the pilothouse switching to a flybridge-style deck. What separates the two yachts is the below deck guest cabin layout. The FD87 delivers a class-leading five-cabin layout, with four spacious guest cabins including what amount to three VIP suites. Horizon will work with Owner’s to customise this layout, with three guest cabins an option. The 28R Enclosed has a standard four-cabin layout with three guest cabins below including a forward VIP. The five-cabin option loses the VIP, switching to versatile convertible twin berth cabins.
