Performance

Versatile planing hull designs mean these two yachts can hit 20knots with ease while also stretching to seriously long ranges when required, but they achieve these feats somewhat differently.

Both yachts run on conventional twin shaftdrives and MTU engines, the Sunseeker 131 using the 3140hp MTU 12V M93 model, the Westport requiring only the 2600hp MTU 16V 96L, a far lighter, smaller engine. This weight saving is, perhaps, less important than what is happening below the waterline, the Westport having a 1.9m draft to the Sunseeker’s 2.58m.

A deep hull may increase drag but might also provide a capable and stable ride. The Westport’s shallow draft design is clearly efficient and, importantly, allows the yacht to access shallow bays, such as are found in the Caribbean where many Westport’s cruise.

With both yachts sharing a displacement of around 340GT it is safe to say design is playing a bigger role than simple weight in the Westport’s overall performance. For efficient or long-distance cruising, the Westport 130 utilises its massive 36,000lt fuel tanks to reach around 2,500nm at 11knots. The 131 has optional extended fuel tanks that take fuel capacity from 21,650l to 26,700l extending its range from 1500nm to around 2000nm at 11knots.

Both yachts offer zero speed stabilisers, incredibly useful for longer slow-speed passages, delivering a smooth stable onboard experience whether running or at rest.

Interior

In terms of layout and overall space, there is little to choose between these two superyachts. The tri-deck design creates two lounges over the main and upper decks, a spacious and open main deck salon with a dining area, and an upper deck skylounge, an elevated and more private space that affords wonderful views and leads onto its own private deck.

As with much of the interior, the layout and finish across the salons can be customised to suit the Owner’s cruising style.

Both galleys are on the main deck, but while the Sunseeker is a discreet crew-style affair the Westport can create some culinary theatre with a surround of bar stools for guests to gather upon.

Accommodation

A trait of true superyacht design, these yachts have main deck owner’s staterooms, elevated and private cabins packed with space and luxury.

Both cabins feel big, with the ensuite right forward, in the bows, you get to use and enjoy the widest part of the yacht, with space for a study, walk-in wardrobes and a lounge area.

The four guest cabins are all ensuite with two VIPs and two twins on the lower deck.

The pilothouse design of these yachts create highly professional helm stations that integrate a Captain’s cabin and office. Each bridge enjoys an elevated position on the upper deck with a broad stretch of displays and touch screen controls. There is a range of seating options with space for guests or crew to join the Captain.

Deck Areas

The tri-deck design creates three levels of decks, with two tiers of aft deck terraces intended for dining and lounging and a full sundeck with space for pretty much whatever you want. There is easily enough room for a bar, lounge, dining table, Jacuzzi and free deck area for loungers, all set beneath a statuesque hardtop for shade or evening mood lighting.

The upper deck aft runs off the skylounge and presents a more private place to retreat to, again there are plenty of options on the final layout here but it does lend itself to social evenings.

Both of these yachts make room for elevated lounges on the foredeck. The Sunseeker has a U-shape seat and table, while the Westport creates a platform that can be fitted out as the Owner wishes. Fun when the yacht is underway, these forward lounges are very private in port, when the yacht is moored stern-to.

Compare Layouts

These semi-custom yachts are very similar in layout and overall tri-deck design, with the main deck Owner’s cabin and skylounge both key features. The flexibility on finish and layout are equally good and while the Sunseeker maxes on volume the Westport isn’t far behind, leaning more towards conviviality than simple space.

The crew quarters are both forward, with six berths for the Princess and eight for the Sunseeker. Both yachts work in proper mess areas for the crew to relax in.
