Design & Construction
Designed around a full displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 12.1m beam and a 3.7m draft. The yacht is built over 6 decks with an internal volume of 1,423 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in mid 2008 with the keel laid under the project name 'Florida'. This was the third yacht built on the Custom design. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of Baton Rouge, crafted by Tim Heywood, emphasizes both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The hull is constructed from durable steel, painted in a sleek grey color. This is complemented by a raked bow, enhancing the yacht's aerodynamic profile and cutting through the water efficiently. The superstructure, crafted from aluminum, is painted in a classic white, providing a striking contrast to the grey hull.
The deck is made from high-quality teak, known for its durability and resistance to harsh marine environments. This choice of material adds a touch of traditional maritime craftsmanship to the vessel. Below the waterline, the hull is coated in black, optimizing its performance and protection in various sea conditions.
Baton Rouge's nearly vertical stern enhances the area available for outdoor activities, including a beach club with an air-conditioned lounge that overlooks the sea.
Heywood's design includes dolphin-watching stations above the bridge wings, providing guests with unique vantage points. The skylounge on the upper deck seamlessly transitions to an alfresco dining area, offering flexible options for both indoor and outdoor gatherings. The pool, located on the bridge deck, features exercise jets and a Jacuzzi, accommodating the owner's request for a functional and enjoyable aquatic space within the limited deck area.
Interior Design
The interior design of Baton Rouge is characterized by a blend of styles, colors, and finishes that provide a distinct atmosphere in each area of the yacht. The design scheme is inspired by a large country house, utilizing a diverse array of materials and techniques to create interest and variety.
The main saloon and formal dining room are designed to accommodate large gatherings, with an emphasis on formality and seriousness. These areas feature mixed timbers, including 29 varieties of wood, such as amboyna burl and wenge, with finishes ranging from natural to high-gloss. The dark woods and symmetrical arrangement of furnishings contribute to a formal atmosphere.
In contrast, the upper saloons are designed to be lighter and more suitable for smaller groups engaging in various activities. These spaces are intended to offer a sense of traveling through different environments within the yacht. The use of diverse textures and colors in these areas adds to the variety and interest.
The main deck features circular reception areas to starboard and astern, creating an inviting entry point for guests. The interior corridor includes an office space that is part of the master suite, designed to be both functional and visually appealing. The upper saloon includes a bar and an ingenious games table, providing a space for guests to relax and enjoy convivial company.
Throughout the yacht, the mixing of natural, satin, and high-gloss finishes helps to indicate the formality of different spaces. The furnishings and color schemes are carefully chosen to reinforce these distinctions. The use of shades of blue, a particular favorite of the owners, is prevalent in the design.
The layout and design of the interior are driven by the goal of entertaining groups of various sizes and providing the perfect surroundings for them at any time of day or night. The upper saloon, for example, offers a forward observation lounge accessible to all, as well as an alfresco dining option and a lounge on the aft deck.
