Design & Construction

Designed around a full displacement ice class steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 12.8m beam and a 3.61m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 2,100 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.

The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in January 2018 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months.

Exterior Design

Designed by Tim Heywood, Planet Nine spans nearly 74 meters in length and is built to handle high latitudes. Her high bow and broad aft helipad are indicative of her capabilities as an explorer yacht, allowing her to navigate through ice and rough seas.

The helipad is designed to support an AgustaWestland AW109 Grand helicopter, with a weight capacity of at least 10 tonnes. A lifting platform allows the helicopter to be stored in a hangar when not in use, enabling the yacht to accommodate two helicopters. The design also integrates the helipad and hangar with the main guest decks, maintaining a consistent exterior look.

Despite her formidable exterior, Planet Nine does not forsake elegance for ruggedness. Heywood asserts a constant state of great comfort and elegance, a testament to the yacht's dual nature: as a sanctuary of luxury and a vessel built to confront the harshest of seas. The superstructure's three-storey configuration maximizes interior volume while presenting an exterior that is measured and unimposing.

The yacht's ice-class certification is subtly intimated by her sturdy build and the protective measures integrated into her design, such as the reinforced hull plates and safeguarded seawater intakes. These features empower Planet Nine to traverse icy waters up to approximately 15 centimeters thick, extending her reach to the most remote and frigid destinations.

Planet Nine's form not only serves her explorer spirit but also upholds the highest standards of luxury, making her a vessel of unparalleled capability and elegance.

Interior Design

Planet Nine includes several lounges and saloons, each designed to offer a comfortable setting for relaxation and socialization. The main deck provides ample space for gatherings in the saloon, and also houses a surround-sound cinema, enhancing the entertainment options available on board.

The design team, led by Tino Zervudachi, utilized a variety of materials and textures to create a distinct atmosphere in each space. The yacht features American elm, tropical olive wood, and wacapou in various cabins, while glass paneling with different tints is used in the bathrooms. Notably, there is no marble on board. Hand-woven abaca, derived from a Philippine banana palm, adorns the walls and ceilings of the main and upper decks, while limed oak and mutenye woods appear in the wheelhouse and staircases.

A notable design feature is the use of different colors of Garrett leather on the corridor-side doors of each guest cabin, helping guests easily identify their rooms. This approach is also applied in the "boot room," where guests can store their shoes and personal items.

Accommodation

Planet Nine offers accommodation for up to 16 guests. The owner's suite occupies nearly the entire main deck, providing an expansive area of approximately 250 square meters. This suite includes a spacious bedroom with ample sofa space and a retractable television. Adjacent sliding doors lead to the private side decks, primarily reserved for crew use during docking. Additionally, the owner's suite features a library and conference space, a supplementary double bedroom, and a separate office, catering to both relaxation and business needs.

A VIP suite is located on the wheelhouse deck. This intimate space includes a dressing room, an en suite bathroom, and a private aft deck equipped with sunbed sofas and a dining area.

On the lower deck, five additional guest cabins and a staff cabin are strategically placed to maximize privacy and silence, thanks to superior soundproofing materials. Each cabin is uniquely finished with a variety of exotic woods such as American elm, tropical olive wood, and wacapou, coupled with glass-paneled bathrooms that vary in tint.

Crew accommodation is designed to support a team of 22, ensuring that the yacht's operations run smoothly and that guest needs are met with efficiency. The inclusion of a dedicated crew lift underscores the thoughtful design aimed at optimizing the crew's workflow.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3516B) 2,575hp engines running at 1600rpm, motor yacht Planet Nine is capable of reaching a top speed of 16 knots, and comfortably cruises at 14 knots. With her 340,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 6,000 nautical miles at 14 knots. She has been fitted with stabilizers to increase on-board comfort when the yacht is at anchor, particularly in rough waters.

Planet Nine's mechanical design is not just about raw power and range; it's about thoughtful engineering that ensures safety, comfort, and an unyielding spirit of adventure.
