Cannes Yachting Festival forced to cancel

In what would have been the first international event to open its doors since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cannes Yachting Festival has been cancelled for 2020.

Presented with the APAVE Safe & Clean label in conjunction with the General Health and Safety Plan (PGSS), Cannes organizers reported a multitude of strict procedures to comply with coronavirus regulations. However the Cannes and the Regional Health Authority (ARS) have forced the show to cancel.

Following announcements in July 2020 made by Franck Riester, the French Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, regarding the alleviation on events from 1 September, the 43rd edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival (CYF), scheduled to run from 8-11 September, looked as though it was set to be the first yachting event in many months to get the go ahead.

However, further developments regarding an increase in COVID-19 cases has resulted in a pushback for events, including the cancellation of CYF.

This decision is a huge disappointment for the entire nautical industry.

In a statement from Sylvie Ernoult, the show's director, she confirmed the forced cancellation due to the surprise denial of dispensation.

Stating that 'it is with great surprise and incomprehension that we take note of the prefect’s decision', Ernoult thanked the relevant bodies for their efforts, and accepts the disappointment the decision has passed on to the yachting industry.

With months of work being put in to adapt the show in order to adhere to the strictest of hygiene regulations, around 400 yachts from brands such as Ferretti Yachts and Benetti were due to be showcased throughout the duration of the four day event.

However, even with all the regulations and additional measures integrated in to the biggest in-water yachting event in Europe, the deterioration of health surrounding the pandemic has resulted in a reversed decision in the interests of health and safety.

If you were planning on attending the Cannes Yachting Festival, you can still view some of the global premieres scheduled for Cannes 2020.
