Ocean Alexander 90R Enclosed Review (2019 Edition)

Ocean Alexander's 90R SUV holds significant importance in the world of yachting, garnering popularity among buyers and serving as a catalyst for the development of other successful models such as the 28R and 30R.

Ocean Alexander has long been a pioneer in the Sports Utility Vessel (SUV) category, with its Revolution models leading the charge in introducing the big and bold SUV design that dominates the market today. The 90R, designed by Evan K Marshall, represents a standout moment in this genre, boasting a sharply modern style coupled with ample interior and deck space.

As one of the earliest examples of SUV design, the 90R continues to drive innovation in the industry and remains highly relevant in today's market. Its success is evident in the dozens of 25-35m models delivered to buyers worldwide. The 90R's influence is further underscored by the introduction of its successor, the very similar 30R.

During a recent trip to the Mediterranean, we had the opportunity to explore one example of the 90R, reaffirming its status as a superb brokerage buy and a testament to Ocean Alexander's ongoing commitment to revolutionizing yacht design.

Design & Build

One of the defining features of almost any Ocean Alexander yacht is its status as a true semi-custom build, allowing owners to fully explore and celebrate the excellent space and volume offered by models like the 190GT and 90R.

Inside, the individuality of each yacht shines through, with no two models looking alike. High-quality materials such as solid wood and marble are expertly integrated into a modern, clean design, reflecting Ocean Alexander's commitment to luxury and customization.

On the exterior, Ocean Alexander presents Evan K Marshall's bold and muscular design in both Open and Enclosed versions. The bridge is always fully covered, offering protection from the elements. At the same time, opening up the upper lounge to the sides creates a flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, resulting in a massive spread of the upper deck aft for enjoyment of the surroundings.

Ocean Alexander provides plenty of flexibility in cabin layouts and finishes, allowing owners to tailor their yachts to their preferences. Typically, the owner's stateroom is located forward on the main deck, with three guest cabins below. While some opt for the spacious forward VIP in the tri-cabin layout, our research indicates that the more egalitarian four-cabin configuration is preferred among 90R owners.

The powerful SUV style of the 90R is complemented by a surprisingly fast semi-displacement hull, capable of reaching speeds of up to 27 knots. However, it also offers smooth and stable cruising at speeds ranging from 10 to 22 knots, with a range of over 1000nm. This versatility makes the 90R an ideal choice for cruising in various conditions and destinations.

Interior Accommodation

One of the most striking aspects of the 90R is its impeccable interior proportions, where all key areas exude a sense of balance and invitation. From the owner's and guest cabins to the upper lounge, and crew quarters, every space is thoughtfully designed and executed to perfection. However, the main deck salon stands out for its sheer size, offering ample room for various furniture options and configurations.

The salon is bathed in natural light, thanks to full-height glass windows that line the space, while huge side deck doors integrate the interior with the outdoor environment. The option to open up the galley to the salon adds to the sense of openness and connectivity, creating a versatile and dynamic living area. For owners who prioritize a convivial atmosphere, the open galley with its inviting dinette area is sure to become a favorite gathering spot, perfect for casual meals and socializing.

Forward on the main deck, the owner's stateroom of the 90R boasts spectacular sections of glass on each side, offering panoramic views of the surroundings. The yacht's voluminous design allows for ample space around the berth, creating a luxurious and inviting atmosphere. Here, owners can relax in a comfortable lounge area or make use of the dressing table, enjoying the sense of openness and connection with the sea that the expansive windows provide.

The upper lounge of the 90R emerges as the social centerpiece, benefiting from its elevated position which offers both privacy and spectacular views. In the Enclosed version, near-perfect dimensions ensure that the lounge feels cozy yet accommodating. Unlike some yachts where massive upper aft decks can encroach on the lounge space, here, there is a perfect balance between deck and lounge area. Glass doors that open fully contribute to the transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the overall sense of spaciousness and connection to the surroundings.

While layouts may vary, both indoor and outdoor bars are common features in this area, catering to the entertainment needs of owners and guests alike. The design of the upper lounge cleverly incorporates the helm station, allowing guests to join the captain and enjoy the journey from the comfort of the seating area, which benefits from deep windows providing panoramic views of the seascape.

Helm Station

The bridge of the 90R offers flexibility, with the option for enclosure, although the test boat's helm was left open to the upper lounge, providing an immersive and social experience. Positioned in a well-elevated and forward location, the helm offers excellent visibility and a commanding view of the surroundings.

Twin helm seats are standard, positioned in front of a raised pod-style console that provides space for triple multifunction displays (MFDs). The minimalist design maximizes space, allowing for a dedicated chart area, while doors on each side provide convenient access to the foredeck.

Deck Lifestyle

In both the Enclosed and Open versions, the upper deck stands out as the highlight of the 90R. The aft deck offers ample space for a variety of fixed or freestanding furniture, as well as a bar and barbecue area, creating an ideal setting for outdoor entertaining. Everything on the upper deck connects seamlessly to the inner lounge, enhancing the overall flow of space and facilitating social interaction.

Moving forward, another lounge area spreads out towards the bows, offering a private and inviting retreat for guests to relax and enjoy the views. With the addition of awnings, the surrounding seating area becomes even more enticing, providing shade and comfort for alfresco dining and lounging experiences.

Practicality is paramount aboard the 90R, with attention to detail ensuring first-class functionality in every aspect. The yacht features a superbly protective working foredeck, providing a secure and efficient space for anchoring and handling lines. Meanwhile, the side decks are designed with safety in mind, boasting deep gunwales and overhangs that provide stability and peace of mind while moving around the vessel. Whether anchoring or navigating the decks, owners and crew can trust in the 90R's commitment to safety and usability.

As you walk through the spacious main deck aft and descend onto the massive teak-topped hydraulic swim platform of the 90R, you'll discover one last surprise awaiting you. The yacht offers a delightful mini lounge in the stern, creating a cozy retreat that's perfect for relaxation when at anchor. While not quite a full-fledged beach club, this space exudes charm and functionality, providing an ideal spot to unwind and soak in the surroundings. With minimal effort, this mini lounge could easily be transformed into a useful sixth cabin, adding even more versatility to the yacht's already impressive repertoire.

Our Verdict

If you're in the market for a big, powerful, and highly capable crew-operated yacht under 30 meters, the 90R remains a standout choice. While it may have been succeeded by the 30R, the 90R continues to impress with its revolutionary design, offering a compelling combination of space, performance, and quality craftsmanship. Few yachts can match the 90R's strong package, which is further enhanced by its inspired exterior design.

Rivals to Consider

There has been some incredible activity in the large, 25m-plus, SUV market. Ocean Alexander alone has delivered, updated and developed multiple models in the space of just a few years. The 90R was joined by a 28R and replaced by a 30R and 27R, all offering the same four or five-cabin package as the test boat.

The closest rival is unarguably Horizon, another Taiwanese builder and pioneer of SUV design with a similarly insatiable appetite for new models. Its FD92 has recently been replaced by the FD90, both yachts delivering incredible muscle and lots of volume, with five cabins delivered in a highly customisable layout. Speeds are slightly lower, at around 20knots, with comfortable cruising delivered by semi-displacement hull designs.

The Sirena 88 is an interesting rival with a different take on SUV design. Its more rakish style still packs in five ensuite cabins, semi-custom options and massive luxurious decks. Performance is also superb with a mix of speed and smooth long-range cruising.
